A late 60's masterpiece!

   As a producer, arranger, and engineer David Axelrod made his mark with the likes of Cannonball Adderley, Lou Rawls, and the Electric Prunes (he wrote, produced and conducted "Mass in F Minor").  What started out as a jazz/rock experiment side project (around the same time as "Mass") and based on the visionary mystical poetry of , the album sound like nothing else from its era, with melodramatic strings tied to heavy, echoed breakbeats (courtesy of drummer extraordinaire ).    Decades later (this, his debut solo LP) reveals itself as a lost classic.   Along with Buddy Miles' work at the time, this was a very early example of the sound that would later become Jazz Fusion.

 

 

A brilliant batch of baroque arrangements, jazzy solos, distorted guitars, funky bass lines and drums all blend with churchy organ and symphony-size orchestras on gems like the much-sampled "Holy Thursday" and the epic closer "The Mental Traveler".

William Blake never sounded so funky !
