THIS ITEM COMES FROM OUR RECENT ACQUISITION OF ABOUT 35 STILL SEALED BLUE NOTE TITLES WHICH APPEAR TO BE OF THE 1966/67 VINTAGE (LIBERTY ERA), IN WHICH (BASED ON THE SAMPLE OF ABOUT 10 ITEMS WE OPENED) ABOUT 80% WERE LIBERTY PRESSINGS (SOME FIRST PRESSINGS, SOME SECOND) AND ABOUT 20% WERE NEW YORK, USA PRESSINGS (FIRST PRESSINGS). THESE TITLES ALMOST INVARIABLY HAVE LIBERTY INNER SLEEVES INSIDE, BUT SOME OF THEM DO ACTUALLY COME WITH THE ORIGINAL NEW YORK, USA LABELS INSIDE, APPARENTLY BEING THE LAST BATCH OF THE BLUE NOTE'S NEW YORK, USA PRESSINGS JUST BEFORE LIBERTY STARTED USING THEIR OWN VERSION OF THE BLUE NOTE LABEL. WE CAUTION THAT THERE IS A STRONG STATISTICAL POSSIBILITY THAT THIS MAY NOT BE THE FIRST (NEW YORK, USA) PRESSING, BUT, IN ANY EVENT, IT IS NOT EXPECTED TO BE LATER THAN THE SECOND (DIVISION OF LIBERTY) PRESSING CIRCA 1967. FROM WHAT WE COULD DETERMINE, ALL OF THESE STILL SEALED BLUE NOTE TITLES HAVE BEEN MASTERED BY RUDY VAN GELDER AND WILL HAVE HIS STAMP IN THE TRAIL-OFF VINYL, BUT NONE OF THE RECORDS WILL HAVE EITHER DEEP GROOVES OR PLASTYLITE ("EAR") STAMPS . 

 

·       BELIEVED TO BE PRESSED ON THE ORIGINAL WHITE AND BLUE 'BLUE NOTE' LABEL WITH 'NEW YORK, USA'  ADDRESS ON THE LABEL

For his third album (actually, it was his second: Blue John would not be released until 1979  -- op.ed.), Big John Patton decided to expand his band to quintet. Retaining the services of his longtime colleagues, guitarist Grant Green and drummer Ben Dixon, he hired tenor saxophonist Fred Jackson (who also played on Along Came John) and trumpeter Richard Williams. The combination of two horns can occasionally overshadow the groove Patton, Green, and Dixon lay down, but for the most part the musicians augment the music instead of detracting from it. Nevertheless, the combo never manages to match the peaks of Along Came John and Blue John. There are several fine moments on the record, and Green and Patton are typically enjoyable, but the record overall is a slight disappointment after its two predecessors.

(a)          THE ALBUM IS STILL FACTORY SEALED AND IS BELIEVED TO BE PERFECTLY MINT. Please note: sealed items are assumed to be mint and are sold as-is, as we have no way of inspecting them. For our policy on still sealed records ►.

 

(b)          The record is believed to come in its original stock inner sleeve.

 

(c)             The record is  apparently pressed on a RELATIVELY  thick, inflexible vinyl. This is NOT a thin, flimsy ('dynaflex' type),  vinyl, but not the thickest, most rigid vinyl, either.

 

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

 

 

·       COVER  [VISIBLE COVER DAMAGE NOTED]

 

COVER IS  STILL SEALED; HOWEVER, WE ARE UNABLE TO GRADE IT MINT OR NEAR MINT DUE TO FLAWS LISTED BELOW; WE GRADE THIS COVER AS GOOD (G)

 

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

 

-        A visible water damage and large stain affect about half of the cover (slightly less on the front panel); there is no structural damage to the cardboard base, but the paper slick is significantly compromised and has caused some erosion in the firmness of the cover ,  visible yellowish discoloration, flaking and sporadic peeling of the paper slick, few minor moldy stains and a slight warp in the affected area.

 

-         Cover shows considerable yellowing on both sides (ONLY ON THE DAMAGED SECTION)

 

-         Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the seams

 

-         Cover has two corners slightly worn / dinged  / bent.

 

-         Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 3

 

-         We caution: albums with significant mold and water damage on the cover typically see dust/mold spores penetrate the cover and end up on the surface of the disc, which may or may not be difficult to fully dislodge and completely clean up. We do not know and cannot speculate whether this will be the case here.  Consider yourself forewarned.

 

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

 

-        No split seams

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No writing

-        No stamps

-        No stickers or labels

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover
