This is raw southern soul as good as it gets. Recorded right in Muscle Shoals, AL at Rick Hall's Fame Studios. For years I've listened to the music of Staton's ex-husband Clarence Carter. But until a few months ago I had never heard this LP or Staton's early music. Wow! It knocked me on my posterior.
The title song is a true killer. Candi wails. She holds nothing back. Shades of Grey doesn't even come close.
This record plays great, sounds great -- full, clear and punchy. The vinyl has much of its original luster and gloss. There are just a few hairlines and/or surface marks. Nothing significant. The labels are clean and show little or no spindle wear. There are occasional bits of surface noise but nothing that really catches the attention. In general, a clean sound.
If we grade by the UK Record Collector magazine, I'd say the record is not quite Excellent. But probably Excellent Minus. By U.S. Goldmine, it's probably not quite Very Good Plus -- but better than Very Good.
The cover has a lot of wear. But there are no splits, tears or major creasing. On the front, a previous owner has attached a paper label with clear tape. I have not tried to remove the label for fear of damaging the cover. Possibly it could be steamed off. Possibly not. The edges and spine have considerable wear. See photos and draw your own conclusion. Cover maybe grades good plus.
