The astonishing 'Visitations' is an engulfing wash of rhythmically fluid field recordings, flutes, synths and percussion realised in 1973 by Jon Gibson - a pivotal member of the 20th century American avant-garde who can claim to be the only person who performed in the world premieres of Terry Riley's 'In C', Steve Reich's 'Drumming, and Philip Glass' 'Einstein on the Beach'. First released by Glass' Chatham Square Productions, 'Visitations' was Gibson's debut solo recording. It made a distinct departure from the deliberately structured minimalist compositions of his peers, preferring a more abstract and even atonal approach embracing the chaotic harmonics and languid rhythms of nature, imperceptibly melding organic and synthetic sources in a free-flowing journey which, for us at least, bridges the gap between Cluster pan-cosmic pastoralism and Rashad Becker's 'Traditional Music of Notional Species Vol.I'. If we weren't told otherwise, it could be liquindi played by alien hands or the field recordings of a gamelan orchestra played at night by as-yet-unidentified creatures in the depths of Borneo; a feast of untold riches for the keener listener and wildest imaginations. What an amazing record!?
