I was four when The Beatles split, but the lads from Liverpool remained a huge influence through my middle school and high school record collecting phase. Sadly, I haven't had a record player for the past 25 years. This baker's dozen of 7" platters has sat in a crate since then, un-played. It's time for somebody else to enjoy these classic tunes... (You'll get 37 tunes in all - yes, I do mean 37 tunes pm 13 discs... read on.)
Start with a single from the boys' days as a band. "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da" is a jolly tune with a nonsensical refrain that's about as catchy as any Paul McCartney ever wrote. The flip side is a classic ballad, "Julia" written by John Lennon about his mother and performed solo. This is a Capital Records single with the collectible numbered picture sleeve (No. 292474). The sleeve does have some damp stains as seen in the photos.
Next up, are a half dozen discs featuring Paul McCartney solo, with his wife Linda and with their later group Wings: - "Coming Up" by Paul McCartney on the A-side with two-track B-side featuring "Coming Up" (Live version with Wings)/"Lunch Box/Odd Sox"on Columbia Records with a picture sleeve - "Junior's Farm"/"Sally G" by Paul McCartney & Wings on Apple Records - "Getting Closer"/"Spin It On" by Wings on Columbia - "Mull of Kintyre"/"Girls' School" by Wings on Capitol (billed as a "double A side") - "Uncle Alber/Admiral Halsey"/"Too Many People" by Paul & Linda McCartney on Apple - "Coming Up" (Live at Glasgow) on a 33 1/3 rpm 7" demo by Paul McCartney
Next are a couple of Geffen Records singles in picture sleeves from John Lennon's final album "Double Fantasy" with his wife Yoko Ono: - "Woman" by John / "Beautiful Boys" by Yoko - "Watching the Wheels" by John / "Yes I'm Your Angel" by Yoko
For the fourth course, spin a couple by George Harrison on his Dark Horse Records label: - "This Song"/"Learning How to Love You" from his 1976 debut solo album. - "All Those Years Ago"/"Writing's On the Wall" (In a picture sleeve featuring the lyrics to his A-side hit - an obvious tribute to his fallen bandmate, John Lennon)
Not to be left out, there's Ringo Starr's early 80s solo hit, "Wrack My Brain" with "Drumming is My Madness" on the flip side. The Boardwalk Records disc was produced by George Harrison who also wrote the lyrics to the A-side tune. McCartney and Lennon also made contributions to the album, but Lennon was tragically assassinated prior to the album's completion.
Finally, just for fun, I'm throwing in a smash hit by a studio band called Stars on 45. Their clap-track mash-up medley of Beatles tunes (with a couple others from the era thrown in) topped the Billboard charts for one week in June 1981. The song features the longest title ever for a number one hit. It officially is known as (insert deep breath here): "Medley: *Intro 'Venus' - Sugar Sugar - No Reply - I'll be Back - Drive My Car - Do You Want to Know a Secret - We Can Work It Out - I Should Have Known Better - Nowhere Man - You're Going to Lose That Girl - *Stars on 45"
Whew! (I know the medley is cheating, but it does tally up to 37 different tunes on 13 slabs of vinyl.)
All the records played well 25 years ago. See photos for condition of sleeves. I'm happy to answer specific questions.
