Why is this album the single rarest Quadraphonic pressing of all Rock/Soul albums? Well, it is simple: it includes original multi-track STEREO (or: Quad, if you have the right equipment) mixes of three classic Sly tracks: "Hot fun in the summertime",  "Thank you"; and "Everybody is a star" - which were only available IN FAKE (ELECTRONIC) STEREO ON ALL PRIOR AND SUBSEQUENT RELEASES (EVEN THE COMPACT DISC AND VINYL REISSUES APPEAR TO HAVE THESE THREE TRACKS IN FAKE STEREO!!!). Apparently, it was pressed in an exquisitely small number of copies and promptly disappeared from the market, never to be seen or heard from again.  Note: even the songs previously released in stereo, have slightly different mixes on this album.

 

Quadraphonic recordings of the early 70's died a slow and agonizing death because of their hopeless incompatibility with the existing stereo and mono equipment (they can be played on stereo equipment, but not to the full effect), but they live on in the hearts of the collectors, and for good reason: some of the finest audiophile recordings ever made - whether rock, soul or classical, were released on some of these, little known and poorly advertised, albums. And, what a gorgeous presentation these recordings are: with rich audio-textures and stunning multi-channel separation which is truly a jaw-dropping, head-spinning experience.

 

NOTE: UNLIKE OTHER QUADRAPHONIC RECORDINGS WHICH CAN OFTEN SOUND SHALLOW AND COMPRESSED WHEN REPRODUCED ON REGULAR STEREO SYSTEMS, THIS ONE HAS A KILLER SOUND OF TRULY AUDIOPHILE QUALITY.  FRANKLY, WE HAVE NEVER HEARD ANY SLY STONE RECORD THAT SOUNDS ANYTHING LIKE THIS. THE WHOLE THING ROCKS FROM START TO FINISH, BIG TIME.

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL  AS  NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs -  are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible,  and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

 

(b)          The record comes in the original (quad-specific) stock inner sleeve.

 

(c)           Quad pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more  preferable to its stereo counterpart. The mix is more natural, humane, "organic" and in some instances (we cannot guarantee) the mixes may be somewhat different than on the stereo version. We estimate that stereo copies of this album outnumber quad by a ratio of at least 20:1.

 

(d)            The record is pressed on a RELATIVELY  thick, inflexible vinyl. This is NOT a thin, flimsy ('dynaflex' type),  vinyl, but not the thickest, most rigid vinyl, either.

 

(e)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

 

 

·       COVER

 

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

 

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

 

-         Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 4

 

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging   (nothing significant).

 

-         Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the bottom seam

 

-         Cover has some fraying/wear along the lower seam

 

-         Visible shelf wear noted on the top seam and spine

 

-         Cover has two corners slightly worn / dinged  (nothing significant)

 

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

 

-        No split seams  (yet).

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No dirt/dust rubbing stains (friction marks caused by rubbing against other covers)

-        No writing

-        No stamps

-        No peel-off marks

-        No stains

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No stickers or labels

-        No water damage

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
