Like any other New Yorker (I have been living in New York for nearly  35 years), yours truly has had more than his fair share of casual street encounters and run-ins with various celebrities and pop icons. Some were funny, some were surprising, and some were downright shocking and brutal: for example,  I had a, um…(ahem!)…high honor of hitting Iggy Pop in the nose with the grocery bag (I kid you not…it was entirely unintentional – honest!!! );  I was practically beat up by the very furious (and equally drunk and/or stoned) Joe Strummer after we violently collided on 36th & 5th;  I was nearly run over by the bike-riding David Byrne (who blazed down Broadway like a man possessed); ran into Judy Collins (who looked like she was out on her --- morning jog ?!?);  got scarred silly by giraffe-like, poncho-clad Lauren Becall who seemed to me to be at least 15 feet tall (OK, alright…I am exaggerating a wee bit, but you get the picture);  had a privilege of sitting next to a wine-sipping Paul Newman in a West Village restaurant; interviewed Allan Ginsberg a few weeks before he died; huddled next to Patti Smith on a park bench, gave Frank Zappa a courtesy bow on (yes) Bowery;  stood side-by-side next to the original Ramones; had an argument with Jonathan Richman; watched Robert De Niro (as well as Philip Glass) push the baby stroller and – this is my favorite – I opened the cab door to a rain-soaked Cary Grant and shook his hand merely weeks before he died (it was ten seconds of pure, unmitigated, BLISS.  I didn’t wash my hands for something like two months!)

But of all my encounters with the famous folks, my conversations  with Jutta Hipp were by far the most bizarre and baffling.

Jutta Hipp spent the last four decades of her solitary life, from the mid-1950s to her death (in the early 2000s, if memory serves) in the Jackson Heights section of Queens, in which I’d lived for 22 years. In all likelihood, she probably lived within the same apartment block where I lived, or very close nearby (Jimmy Raney, the legendary Jazz guitarist also lived there, and Louis Armstrong wasn’t too far off, either). She lived in such obscurity and seclusion that not even many hardcore Jazz fans knew she was still alive (I, for one, had no idea).

As it turned out, Jutta Hipp was an avid painter and a lifelong member of the , and regularly exhibited her works in the courtyard of the Public School 69 in Jackson Heights, usually on weekends during springs and summers.  I would always stop by and chitchat and exchange pleasantries with the artists – almost all elderly people – when the Club was in public session.  One of the artists – unbeknownst to me – was Jutta Hipp.  Our conversations were entirely inconsequential and utterly unmemorable. I could not remember the specifics of a single one if my life depended on it. The only thing I do remember was her quick wit, and her lucid, bright, flashing eyes. I also remember that in one of our chitcats Cezanne was somehow mentioned, but god knows who of us mentioned him or in which context. At the time, I had absolutely NO idea I was talking to one of the greatest Jazz pianists of all time and – certifiably – one of two or three greatest European Jazz musicians in history.

Fast forward to the year 2005. In 2005 or so the then-president of the Jackson Heights Art Club passed away at the age of something like 95. I can’t remember how or why, but I was contacted by the executor of his estate, who wanted me to check out and appraise some of the records left in the gentleman’s apartment. I went there – it was a beautiful, 5-room apartment in those stylish 1930s apartment building, with a private elevator entry – and there, among all the debris and detritus (hoarded, apparently for decades for zero rhyme or reason) – was a group of old records (alas, nothing really worthwhile).  Let’s see if I remember correctly: there were multiple copies of the Village People albums (some unopened), every conceivable Barbra Streisand and Bette Midler recording under the sun, collected works of Liberace, solo albums by Sal Mineo and Rock Hudson, mounds and mounds of Carol Channing and Rae Bourbon recordings, Viennese operettas of all kind and vintage, and Vaudeville and Broadway scores galore . Mountains of them (literally). And, oh, lest I forget…Boy George and Menudo did figure prominently, too.

I practically fled the apartment in sheer horror.  It was like a scene from  Hitchcock’s “Psycho”, minus the shower scene.  . I thought Norman Bates’ mummified mommy was going to pop out of some hidden closet and chase me off with a meat cleaver any second.  I could not escape the apartment fast enough. I practically tripped on my way out

Before I fled, though, I spotted an interesting-looking pile of paper on one table, with various handwritten and hand-drawn doodlings, sketches, caricatures, and alike, many of them on tiny yellow or pink post-it-notes. The executor of the will informed me that those were Jutta Hipp’s funny “memos” (personal messages and impromptu notes) to the President of the Art Club which he carefully gathered (like everything else) for decades and decades. . I flipped!!!. I asked to buy the material, but was brutally rebuffed. The drawings, the sketches and the notes (some clearly decades old) were not for sale, she said (to my infinite and indescribable sorrow). I never saw any of those sketches again. Who has them now and whom they were bequeathed (or sold to) is anybody’s guess.  I can only hope they were not senselessly discarded.

It was only then – and then only - after the executor dutifully described the physical appearance of Jutta Hipp in her waning days - that I realized that the elderly lady with whom I chatted many times over the years was actually Jutta Hipp, the Grand Dame of the Jazz ivories. By then, it was too late. She had already moved on to a great Jazz gig in the sky (most likely with Zoot Sims J) and was probably painting with Cezanne, way over yonder someplace).

There you have it, folks. The long and the short (mostly long) of my brief,  retroactive encounters with the Jazz legend.  The encounters I wasn’t even aware of until it was too late.

·                               CONDITION:

·                               RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VERY GOOD+(+) . CAUTION: The vinyl is NOT MINT or NEAR MINT, but is nevertheless in a very nice and clean condition. There are some surface marks and abrasions, mostly light and superficial, although some may be longer than 1.1/4 inches (1 inch = 2.5 centimeters)

(b)          The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings).

(c)           The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)          This is the original flat-edge pressing.

(e)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER (THIS IS THE ORIGINAL, LAMINATED, GLOSSY COVER):

THE COVER IS ABOUT VERY GOOD+(+)

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has a partially split top seam (between 6 and 8 inches  /15 to 20 centimeters); This split seam was delicately taped by the previous owner with a piece of transparent scotch tape

-        Significant water staining noted on the back panel (covering about 90% of the surface)

-        Cover has a small store sticker /label, which may be possible to remove with a little effort (we did not attempt to)

-         Cover has some visible ring wear; On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 5  (VISIBLE ON BACK SIDE ONLY) .

-         Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-         Cover shows considerable yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging.

-         Cover has some visible fraying/tattering on all three seams

-         Cover has two corners slightly worn / dinged

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No wrinkles or creases

-        No writing

-        No stamps

-        No peel-off marks

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
