An absolute MUST for Philly Joe Jones fans or any fan of jazz drumming! His ideas, swing, touch, dynamics, interaction with the band, humor and creativity are SUBLIME on this album. Also, the recording of the drums is nicely up front and quite rich sounding relative to many of the Miles Davis albums upon which Mr. Jones can be heard.

There is a wonderful palpable sense of "weight" to Philly's drums on this recording than most of his other recordings which I think gives even more clues to what Philly really sounded like for those that never had the fortune to hear him in person. (Except his album 'Showcase' which to my ears is equally rich and up front in terms of drum sound. Vinyl is another matter and unfortunately, I don't own a copy of this album in that format yet so I can't speak on it.) It really sounds like he's using a 20-inch bass drum on this album.

Of special note is Philly Joe's dancing all throughout the melody, solos and his own solo Dizzy Gillespie's "Ow!" on one of those 'in the crack' tempos that can be so challenging for younger and less experienced musicians to handle. His fluidity on this track is SPECTACULAR.

This album mirrors the finest of the African American dance tradition of tap in combination with Philly Joe's intense dedication to studying the rudimental drum solos of Charles S Wilcoxon and how it relates and translates into modern Be Bop drumming. His brilliant use of the fundamentals to come up with so many creative and inspired results is a treasure to music and thankfully we have such a wonderful recording like this to enjoy it.

This is a crucial and legendary recording of Philly Joe Jones' that's should be in the essential list of recordings of this titan of Jazz Drumming and music.

·                               CONDITION:

·                               RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL  AS  NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs -  are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible,  and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The album comes with its original, 'rice paper' inner sleeve (typically used in the 50’s and very early 60’s) which has - apparently with success - shielded the vinyl from the harmful impact of elements over many years! We believe that, despite great technological progress, these early 'rice paper' inner sleeves provided a degree of protection MUCH HIGHER than any other material used ever since.

(c)           The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings).

(d)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(e)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER:

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has a partially split top seam (between 4 and 6 inches  / 10 to 15 centimeters); This split seam was delicately taped by the previous owner with a piece of transparent scotch tape

-         Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2   (front side) and 4 (back side)

-         Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging  (nothing significant).

-         Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine

-         Cover has some visible fraying/tattering on all three seams

-         Cover has all four corners slightly worn / dinged (nothing significant)

-         Cover has a small quality control (inspection) / price stamp on the back panel

-         Cover has a small  wrinkle (crease) in the cardboard base on the back panel

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No writing

-        No peel-off marks

-        No stains

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No stickers or labels

-        No water damage

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
