The Project and outcome
Recorded in 1977 and directed by Jimmy Henderson The Direct Disc Sound of The Glenn Miller Orchestra is a superbly polished and smooth performance as one would expect. This Limited Edition Direct Cut is captured at 24-bit 96kHz resolution and was a project I had waiting in the wings for a while and the result doesn't disappoint - a shame it wasn't a double album... crank up the volume and enjoy. The vinyl is in lovely condition after 40 years in circulation.
Sample sleeve notes
From start to finish the entire engineering team went to great lengths to preserve the integrity of this recorded performance. Microphones that would compliment the sections being recorded, were carefully selected so that a minimum amount of equalization would be used, The cutting amplifiers were Neumann SAL 74's driving Neumann SX 74 cutterheads mounted on VMS 70 lathes. We think you will find this recording to be free from the coloration typical of the electronic recording process. Glen Glancy
SIDE ONE
1. "HERE WE GO AGAIN" - Tenor saxophonist Dick Gerhart, a nine-year veteran of the Glenn Miller Orchestra; trumpeter Dale
Orris and The Boss solo on this rousing opener, sparked by the inspired, tasty drumming of the band's newest and youngest member, Chicagoan Greg Rockingham.
2. "STRING OF PEARLS" - Soloists Jack Keeling on alto and Don New on tenor emerge from the great Miller reed sound on this durable hit and dancers' favorite, always synonymous with the Miller Orchestra.
3. "RHAPSODY IN BLUE" - Versatile lead trumpeter Andy Hagan and Gerhart on tenor are at their most lyrical, soloing on this George Gershwin classic.
4. "1 GOT RHYTHM" - Hagan and Gershwin encore to set the stage for Jimmy Henderson's strongly individual and soulful jazz trombone solo, the ensemble propelled by Zach Peterson's resonant bass in the foreground,
5. "AMERICAN PATROL" - Henderson gives new life to this monumental tune by accelerating the tempo to tour de force velocity for the agilely musical Rockingham and Hagan - and the entire band. This title, incidentally, fills the destination panel on the front of the sleek silver and blue bandbus in which the group travels the U.S.
SIDE TWO
1. "JERSEY BOUNCE" - Orris' trumpet solo rides buoyantly atop the formidable reeds on this very current sounding rendition of the '30s hit.
2. "MOONLIGHT SERENADE" - The romantic ballad that epitomizes Glenn Miller..his composition, his theme, the original arrangement and the dreamy Miller sound of the clarinet lead (Keeling, here) over the blend of saxophones.
3. "TUXEDO JUNCTION" - Light-fingered pianist John Brighenti, muted trumpeters Mike Booth and Orris and trombonist Gary Tole solo on the memorable Miller standard.
4. "STARDUST" - Gerhart's fine tenor and Hagan's mellifluous trumpet solo on Hoagy Carmichael's greatest achievement.
5. "IN THE MOOD" - If any popular song in American music conjures the vision of a dancefloor filled with lithely moving couples, it is this Joe Garland melody, originally recorded by Miller August 1, 1939, and recognized as the biggest selling swing instrumental in history. Gerhart, New, Hagan and Orris solo.
