Eric Clapton is usually thought of as John Mayall's most important right-hand man, but the case could also be made for his successor, Peter Green. The future Fleetwood Mac founder leaves a strong stamp on his only album with the Bluesbreakers, singing a few tracks and writing a couple, including the devastating instrumental "Supernatural." Green's use of thick sustain on this track clearly pointed the way to his use of guitar riffs with elongated, slithery tones on Fleetwood Mac's "Albatross" and "Black Magic Woman," as well as anticipating some aspects of Carlos Santana's style. Mayall acquits himself fairly well on this mostly original set (with occasional guest horns), though some of the material is fairly mundane. Highlights include the uncharacteristically rambunctious "Leaping Christine" and the cover of Freddie King's "Someday After a While (You'll Be Sorry)."

Simply the greatest of all John Mayall albums - on this one, Eric Clapton was  replaced by Peter Green, and the result is even moodier, bluesier, more soulful sound, characteristic of Peter Green's early days with Fleetwood Mac (which were to follow this album in a few months). The highlights include the near-psychedelic, delicate, gentle "The super-natural", dominated by Peter Green's trademark guitar and covers of Freddy King's "The Stumble" and "Someday, after awhile…" (The Bluesbreakers already covered Freddy King's "Hideway" when Clapton was in the band, on the previous album) . Finding a still sealed original copy?!?! Forget it – not even a HOPE!!! This may be the last one you will ever see.

Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

 

(c)           The record is believed to come in its original stock inner sleeve.

 

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!
