The Challengers ‎– Surfbeat -  Vault ‎– 100 1ST ISSUE MONO
Very early pressings (1st day pressings) have a vocal version of Surfin Safari which was changed to an instrumental version the next day because the band was unhappy with the take. THIS IS THE VERY RARE 1ST DAY RELEASE WITH THE VOCAL VERSION
Surfbeat was one of the first three surf music albums, only Dick dale's Surfer's Choice and the Beach Boys' Surfin' Safari were earlier. It set sales records for its day, especially considering that the surf music was still a regional phenomenon. The album lives up to its title because its virtually a compendium of the early surf sound and the southern California scene. The surf music scene was young and vibrant and there weren't that many surf tunes yet so everybody did each other's tunes with no problems. There wasn't any "this is my song", everybody did their take on Miserlou or Mr. Moto.

So what The Challengers recorded here included both of those songs, the first by Dick Dale himself, and the second by The Belairs, whose drummer, Richard Delvey, left to form The Challengers. There are pre-surf music tunes that influenced the surf sound like Red River Rock (Johnny & the Hurricanes 1959) and Bulldog (The Fireballs 1959) and also the Fireballs' Torquay, and Duane Eddy's Ramrod. Challengers' originals include the really rockin' Kamikaze and the blues crawl of Vampire.
None of this is to suggest that the Challengrs were a cover band. If that was true then everybody was at that time. This is what you would have heard at any surfers' stomp in those days. When someone bought Surfbeat they were being introduced to the whole surf music scene.

Some incredible songs on this 1967 album from composer Reid King who married the Brazilian sound with
popular music of that era to produce an album that should have really taken off then, but due to the strange
setup of Canterbury Records who were in business to lose money for a Mattel tax shelter, the album was allowed
to die on the vine by Canterbury when it started to take off with airplay and sales.  Reid King went on to become
one of the foremost composers of contemporary music for the gut-string guitar.

FINALLY ONE LAST WORD RE HAIRLINES, IT IS ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO FIND ANY NON SEALED RECORD WITHOUT THEM, MANY HAD THEM FROM NEW. MOSTLY THEY ARE A RESULT OF STORAGE AND USE AND USUALLY HAVE LITTLE IMPACT ON THE SOUND QUALITY. THE SAME GOES FOR BACKGROUND NOISE, UNFORTUNATELY ALL RECORDS WILL HAVE SOME AND THIS VARIES AND REFLECTS THE PRESSING QUALITY.

Most records have production marks where someone touched or moved the vinyl while it was still semi-soft.  These marks look like smudges, but are not scratches or "paper scuffs" and do not usually sound.  Untouched vinyl from newly-opened records have these marks.

 RECOMMENDED!

FULLY GUARANTEED!
