At this stage of their career, The Pentangle are exhausted after long stints of touring and many years of recording, this is the beginning of the end. They burst onto the scene as a unique Folk-Jazz band, who rode the wave of the British Folk explosion along with other bands that enjoyed superstar status at the end of the sixties. Solomon’s Seal marks the end of an era for the band. Just parting ways with their label ‘Transatlantic’, they signed a new contract with their US distributors in Reprise records with plans to tour off the back of this release. However, very soon after its release, the band broke up and instead of celebrating another gem in the Pentangle catalogue, the band members were left with hefty debt that they would need to repay over the following years and due to the tour that never happened, the album sort of got left behind and was a financial failure.

 

Later years would see a line up change and the band being lead by Jacqui McShee and a list of guest players, that although would keep the interest in the band alive, would never reach the former glory of this astonishing line up.

 

Solomon’s Seal is a beautiful album, no doubt about it. It contains some of Jacqui McShee’s most enchanting vocal songs in ‘The Cherry-Tree Carol’ and the mesmerizing folk ballad ‘Willy O’ Winsbury’, which almost gets me to tears. It's also evident on this album, which is regarded as a ‘stale and tired sounding’ album, that the five gifted individuals that made up The Pentangle were really something to behold as this album, by all standards, is fantastic. The dexterous playing of Renbourn and the raggedy, ramblin’, highway sounding Blues writing of Bert Jansch is one of a kind, while Danny Thompson and Terry Cox define the record and the bands unique sound with the light and shade of their dynamic rhythms. 

 

A fantastic record with enough great material to stand up beside their previous releases. Folk fans of this era will enjoy this.

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS NEAR MINT. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

 

(b)          The record comes in the original stock inner sleeve.

 

(c)           The album comes with its original insert/lyrics sheet

 

(d)          The record is pressed on a RELATIVELY  thick, inflexible vinyl. This is NOT a thin, flimsy ('dynaflex' type),  vinyl, but not the thickest, most rigid vinyl, either.

 

(e)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

 

 

·                               THE COVER

 

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

 

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

 

-        A few minor greasy stains noted on the back panel (less than 1 square inch in size, total)

 

-        Cover has a partially split bottom seam (between 2 and 4 inches  / 5 to 10 centimeters)

 

-        Cover has some fraying/wear along the lower seam

 

-        Cover shows some light yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging.

 

-        Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 3  (front side) and 4 (back side)

 

-        Visible shelf wear noted on the seams
