Ry Cooder is just 22 years old when he already has an impressive biography as a sought-after studio musician and sideman. Shortly after signing a contract with Warner Music in 1969, he released his first album under his own name and confidently built on the skills he acquired early on and probably also a little on the rarity of his favorite instrument, the steel guitar.
The LP of the same name is a fascinating amalgamation of blues, folk, rock & roll and pop, a unique mixture with a combination of great songs, virtuoso playing and sometimes bizarre but imaginative arrangements. As material, Cooder, son of folklorists, has unearthed ten pearls that span six decades and go back to the 1920s - from legends such as Woody Guthrie, Blind Blake, Sleepy John Estes and Leadbelly, as well as a recent Randy Newman composition. But as great as his selection is, it is the exuberant charm of his own instrumental piece "Available Space" that almost steals the show from the other pieces. In a room-filling and open-ended manner, Cooder plays an ironic game of irregular phrases without words that promise the listener something new and ultimately circle in an endless loop.
Cooder's need to prove himself, tempered by awe of the past, helps create a completely independent work that also rewards the adventurous listener.

This Speakers Corner production was made 100% purely analog using analog master tape and mastering. More information at www.pure-analogue.com.
