ELLINGTON DUKE - At NEWPORT (140g) Duke Ellington - At NEWPORT
Audiophile 140g reissue of Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab - Silver Label
Ellington at NEWPORT was the impetus for Ellington's comeback in the mainstream. It is the recording of a spectacular performance at the NEWPORT Jazz Festival on Rhode Island in 1956 that exceeded all audience expectations and ensured Ellington's financial success for life. The concert began with a strongly blues-influenced suite written especially for the festival, in which Ellington's agile piano riffs, JIMMY Hamilton's peppery clarinet interludes and Clark Terry's trumpet runs set the tone. The highlight of the evening, however, was a union of the titlesDiminuendo in blue and Crescendo in blue with the tenor saxophonist Paul Gonsalves as soloist. Already with the first notes there was movement in the audience, with the seventh chorus people began to dance. And then the auditorium was transformed into such a cauldron for a total of 27 choruses that the organizers were on the verge of breaking off the concert.
Re-mastered and pressed at RTI, Mobile Fidelity is now releasing this jazz classic in the Silver Series with unprecedented transparency and authenticity. Musically and sonically a must!
