In contrast to the 1970s -- when artists ranging from Curtis Mayfield to Parliament/Funkadelic were praised for their albums -- singles defined soul music in the 1960s. It has often been pointed out that many Stax and Motown albums of the '60s had their share of filler -- nonetheless, others were full of gems that should have been released as singles. Knock on Wood is one of Eddie Floyd's best albums. The soul shouter successfully embraced sleeker northern soul on other projects, but here he sticks to the type of raw, hard-edged Memphis soul that Stax was first known for. From the unforgettable title song (a number one R&B hit) to covers of J.J. Jackson's "But It's Alright," Jerry Butler's "I Stand Accused," and Wilson Pickett's "634-5789," this set beautifully illustrates the splendor of down-home Southern R&B.

One of the very finest, classical soul albums from the peak of the Stax/Volt period of dominance of the soul charts in the mid-1960's, as well as Eddie Floyd's personal pinnacle. Title track alone must have been covered by at least 15 different artists since, David Bowie and Anita Bell included. Track listing: Knock on wood - Something you got - But it's alright - I stand accused - If you gotta make a fool of somebody - I don't want to cry - Raise your hand - Got to make a comeback - 634-5789 - I've just been feeling bad - High-heel sneakers - Warm and tender love.

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL  AS  (WEAK) NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs -  are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible,  and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

 

(b)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

 

(c)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

 

 

·                               THE COVER

 

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

 

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

 

-        Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 3

 

-        Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

 

-        Cover shows some light yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging (nothing significant)

 

-        Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine  (nothing significant)

 

-        Cover has a tiny, barely visible cutout hole in one of the corners

 

-         Visible shelf wear noted on the top and bottom seams

 

-         Cover has one corner slightly dinged (nothing significant)
