RARE-DAG NASTY 85-86 7” 4 DISC SET COLORED VINYL GREEN, WHITE, PURPLE, PINK SFLS.

This is the vinyl edition of the great Dag Nasty compilation “85-86” on Selfless Records (SLFS5-7). This features the first demo with Shawn Brown on vocals ( songs later featured on Can I Say), the demo prior to Wig Out at Denko’s featuring Peter Cortner on vocals, and additional outtakes including a version of Another Wrong II featuring Dave Smalley on vocals.
Disc 1 and 2 comprise the Shawn Brown demo, along with a live cut ( Moni-Q). The later recoding of these songs on Can I Say makes it hard in retrospect to argue with guitarist Brian Baker’s decision to replace Shawn with Dave Smalley. But at the time, this decision was met with a lot of ridicule. Shawn was a force of nature behind the mic for Dag, and no small contributor to the bands initial success. The songs here may not be the best recordings, but they are a great document of Shawn’s time in the band. Shawn would go on to form the underrated Swiz and later Red Hare. Shawn would reunite with Dag for a reunion tour ( absolutely phenomenal,) and a studio recording of a 7” ( Cold Heart,) on a Dischord.
Disc 3 featuring Peter Cortner on vocals boasts demo versions of Safe, All Ages Show, Falling and Trying. All Ages Show would somehow be shelved until the 7” “All Ages Show” came out before Field Day in 1987, and the other songs were re-recorded to feature new bass player Doug Carrion on “Wig Out at Denko’s”. These songs are arguably not as good a recording as that LP, but the excitement and energy of these early recordings is audible. Much punchier versions than the Dischord release that were also shelved when Baker quit the band to join Doggy Rock (née Doggy Style,) before returning with Doug (tails between their legs,) to record Wig Out.
Disc 4 Side A has two outtakes in “My Dog’s a Cat” and “Mule”( originally recorded as “I Wouldn’t Cry For You” with Shawn on vocals,). I want to suggest that “My Dog is a Cat” was originally a Bloody Mannequin Orchestra Song, but this just may have been the influence of former members bassist Roger Marbury and drummer Colin Sears ( current and founding members in Dag,)
These records are listed as Near Mint, having been played once and put away. They sound great (albeit, colored vinyl,). They are Pink, Green, White and Purple and not identified as which disc is which. The inner sleeves containing the records are listed as VG+ due to slight ring wear being apparent. The slipcover containing these records really should have been made out of sturdier material. It is not rigid by any means, and this has led to the record sleeves inside experiencing some unnecessary duress. The last 3 photos show some wear to the corners of the sleeve/slipcase. So this has been listed in VG condition only. I like to grade conservatively. The Tracklist follows. Thanks for looking!
