Chris Hillman, Gram Parsons, and Kevin Kelley all left the Byrds in wake of the release of Sweetheart of the Rodeo, leaving Roger McGuinn to assemble a new band from scratch. Dr. Byrds & Mr. Hyde, the first album with McGuinn as unquestioned leader (and sole founding member), was an interesting but uneven set that saw him attempting to bring together the psych-tinged rock of the group's early period with the pure country that Parsons had brought to Sweetheart. The new lineup on this album was as strong as any the band would ever have, with guitarist Clarence White sounding revelatory whenever he opens up, and Gene Parsons and John York comprising a strong and sympathetic rhythm section. But while everyone on board was a great musician, they don't always sound like a band just yet, and the strain to come up with new material seems to have let them down; McGuinn contributes a few strong originals (especially "King Apathy III" and "Drug Store Truck Drivin' Man," the latter written with Parsons before his departure from the group), but the two songs he penned for the movie Candy are just short of disastrous, and the closing medley of "My Back Pages" and "Baby What You Want Me to Do" sounds like padding. Dr. Byrds & Mr. Hyde proved there was still life left in the Byrds, but also suggested that they hadn't gotten back to full speed yet.

By the time this great 1968 album was recorded, John York was in, and David Crosby, Gram Parsons and Gene Clark were an ancient history. This, of course, had major repercussions on the sound of the band. Gone were the celestial harmonies and ringing Rickenbeckers and the sound of the fuzzy guitar and feedback was in. The album sports one of the best versions of the Dylan song – any Dylan song - ever attempted by anyone: the regal This Wheel’s on Fire, plus a multitude of other goodies which will haunt you and taunt you and force you to hum to them when you least expect it. After the Byrds’ recorded their two masterpieces: "Younger than yesterday" and "Notorious byrd brothers" in 1966/7, Jim, er…Roger McGuinn entered his "space" phase, which explains total preoccupation of this album with space themes.

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS EXCELLENT. This is one of those albums that are somewhat difficult to grade. It is somewhere between VG++ and NEAR MINT, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions ARE visible, but they are extremely shallow, superficial  and only moderately visually distracting (nothing significant).For the most part, the vinyl looks impeccable without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

 

(b)          The record comes in the original stock inner sleeve.

 

(c)           The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

 

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

 

 

·                               THE COVER

 

COVER IS (WEAK) NEAR MINT, STILL SEALED AND COVERED IN ITS ORIGINAL ►SHRINK WRAP  (A SMALL PIECE OF SHRINK WRAP IS MISSING)

 

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

 

-        The cover has a tiny erosion in the paper slick in one small section of the front panel which is not covered by the shrink wrap, which has been delicately repaired/camouflaged with the black marker (less than 1/8 square inch in size)

 

-        Cover has a small, rectangular, sticker residue (small yellowish discoloration from the removed price sticker)

 

-         Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 1.

 

-        Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine   (VISIBLE ON BACK SIDE ONLY)

 

-         Cover has one corner slightly dinged (nothing significant)
