·      DUKE ELLINGTON WITH HIS ORCHESTRA, FEATURING PAUL GONSALVES AND JOHNNY HODGES  – AT NEWPORT 1956  (NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH 'DUKE ELLINGTON AT NEWPORT '58 FEATURING GERRY MULLIGAN') – ORIGINAL 1957 COLUMBIA RECORDS MONO LP CL-1245

·      ORIGINAL U.S. PRESSING

·      THIS 67-YEAR OLD ALBUM IS INORDINATELY MUSICALLY AND HISTORICALLY IMPORTANT FOR A NUMBER OF REASONS, NOT THE LEAST BEING THAT IT CONTAINS THE LONGEST TENOR SAX SOLO IN THE HISTORY OF RECORDED MUSIC WHICH NEARLY TRIGGERED A RIOT AT THE FESTIVAL (EAT YOUR HEART OUT, BOB DYLAN -- DUKE ELLINGTON TORE THE ROOF OFF OF THE NEWPORT SUCKER TEN YEARS BEFORE YOU DID :-P) . HOW PAUL GONSALVES DIDN'T PASS OUT ON THE STAGE WHILE BLOWING NON-STOP FOR NEARLY 8 MINUTES IS BEYOND ME.

·      ORIGINAL “SIX EYE” RED AND BLACK COLUMBIA LABEL

·      DEEP GROOVE PRESSING

·      THIS IS THE ORIGINAL, AUTHENTIC, FIRST U.S. PRESSING; THIS IS NOT A REISSUE, AN IMPORT, OR A COUNTERFEIT PRESSING.

·      ORIGINAL, THICK CARDBOARD COVER (AMERICAN STYLE)

·      ORIGINAL GLOSSY, LIGHTLY LAMINATED COVER

·      CLEAN, WEAR-FREE LABELS

Duke Ellington's appearance at the 1956 Newport Jazz Festival has long been famous, and justifiably so. Paul Gonsalves' 27-chorus tenor solo on "Diminuendo in Blue and Crescendo in Blue" practically started a riot at Newport and made headlines around the world. The momentum generated by this concert led to Ellington's comeback and never let up during his 18 remaining years. After a brief truncated set that was cut short because four of Ellington's musicians could not be found, the Ellington Orchestra returned to the stage three hours later. They played "Take the 'A' Train," "Newport Jazz Festival Suite," a showcase for Harry Carney on "Sophisticated Lady," and a so-so Jimmy Grissom vocal outing on "Day In, Day Out." Then came "Diminuendo in Blue and Crescendo in Blue." The saxophone interlude caused crazed dancing, and soon the crowd was as loud as the band. When the crowd would not quiet down, Ellington saved the day by closing with a long version of "Skin Deep." But unknown to most people is that on July 9, the orchestra went to the studios to reproduce the program. The earlier version of the "Newport Jazz Festival Suite" had been a bit sloppy and Gonsalves' famous tenor solo on "Diminuendo" had actually been played into the wrong microphone. Ellington's band therefore performed the entire "Newport Jazz Festival Suite" again and it was issued  on the original LP.Highly recommended.

CONDITION:

THE RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)         WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VERY GOOD++ . CAUTION: The vinyl is NOT MINT or NEAR MINT, but is nevertheless in a very nice and clean condition. There are some surface marks and abrasions, mostly light and superficial, although some may be longer than 1.1/4 inches (1 inch = 2.5 centimeters)

(b)         The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings).

(c)         The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)         Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·                          THE COVER

THE COVER IS ABOUT VERY GOOD+ (VG+)

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-       Cover has a partially split top seam (between 4 and 6 inches  / 10 to 15 centimeters)

-       Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 3  (front side) and 4 (back side)

-       Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-       Cover shows some light yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging (nothing significant)

-       Cover has some visible fraying/tattering on all three seams

-       Cover has two corners slightly worn / dinged  (just a beginning of the split seam)

-       The cover has a few tiny scratch marks on the front side  (nothing significant)

-       Cover has a visible "wrinkle"(crease)  in one of the corners.   (VISIBLE ON BACK SIDE ONLY)

NO OTHER VISIBLE FLAWS OR IMPERFECTIONS ON THE  COVER
