Terrence Mac Swiney was Mayor of Cork when he was arrested by British authorities and jailed for sedition. While in prison he underwent a hunger strike to bring world attention to freedom for Ireland. In 1920, on the 74th day of his hunger strike, he died in prison.

His inaugural address, when originally elected mayor of Cork, was used as evidence against him by British police to arrest and imprison him.
