The Beatles released their latest official long-player, Beatles for Sale, in England on December 4 of 1964, capping a year of the most extraordinary activity ever seen on the part of a performing group. Meanwhile, back in the U.S., where sales were easily dwarfing the group's U.K. success by sheer weight of numbers, Capitol Records saw no reason to give 14 new songs to the waiting public, especially as they were sitting on one leftover song from the U.K. Hard Day's Night album, and had a current single whose two sides, "I Feel Fine" and "She's a Woman," they could use to promote whatever they released. The result was Beatles '65, issued a little less than two weeks before the start of that year and ten days before Christmas. This was the first U.S. album on which the co-mingling of tracks started to wear on the originals -- The Beatles' Second Album had been a miraculous assembly of material from nearly a half-dozen sessions and sources, while Something New was basically the Hard Day's Night soundtrack without "A Hard Day's Night" or "Can't Buy Me Love," but punched up with a pair of hard-rocking covers. Beatles '65 was essentially the core of the rather dour Beatles for Sale, punched up with the new single and an off-beat but killer remnant from A Hard Day's Night, and while it all sounded OK and duly topped the charts, the cohesion was starting to get lost -- in between the acoustic-textured Beatles for Sale numbers and the feedback-laden "I Feel Fine," the hard-rocking "She's a Woman," and the somewhat less sharp-edged Carl Perkins covers here, there was less and less method to the compiling for the U.S., all courtesy of Dave Dexter, Jr., a Capitol executive who'd had to be ordered to start authorizing the release of Beatles material by Capitol in America (as opposed to passing on it and letting other licensees handle it), and seemingly spent most of the next two years trying to prove how right he'd been to neglect them. The odd thing was that, despite the weak and odd re-couplings of songs, the album did sell, and song for song it was still better than anything the competition was creating, and as long as the singles were everything they should be, the band was on safe ground. With this and its next release, Capitol was starting to figure out just how valuable each Beatles song was by itself, and how far they could go re-packaging them, as long as they retain some measure of common sense. They would lose that attribute with the U.S. Help! album, courtesy of Dexter, but in the meantime the label did get out flawed if entertaining compilations such as this.
(REVIEW REPRINTED COURTESY OF BRUCE EDER, ALL MUSIC GUIDE /ALLMUSIC.COM/)
If you are a European, be forewarned: this is a VERY different version of the album from the one you are used to hearing (actually, European version of this album does not even exist - European equivalent of this album would probably be "Beatles for sale" , the group's fourth UK album): American mixes of the Beatles albums are generally different, more "raw" and placing much more emphasis on guitar licks and lines (this one is no exception).
This is the fifth Beatles album, and - like all American versions of Beatles albums - this one, too, is different from the British counterpart in name, number of the tracks, mixing and overall packaging. This may be your final chance to grab a piece of history in a MINT condition.
Track listing: No reply - I'm a loser - Baby's in Black - Rock & Roll Music - I'll follow the sun - Mr. Moonlight - Honey Don't - I'll be back - She's a woman - I feel fine - Everybody's trying to be my baby
Some Reasons Why You Should Own Original American Mono Beatles Albums:
I. These are genuine historical artifacts. Rock & Roll did not produce many works deserving to be called history; albums by Beatles are a noble exception to this rule.
II. These pressings are coveted by EVERYONE and, despite the fact that Beatles sold almost a billion records, precious few original mono albums in good shape remain on the market.
III. Mono pressings are, almost by definition, the very first pressings. They were in print for only short period of time, ranging from only few weeks (Magical Mystery Tour) to three years (Meet the Beatles).
IV. First, mono pressings sound MUCH better and are much more vivid than the stereo versions.
V. Mono versions contain different versions or mixes of many tracks; in some cases mono versions contain the only "proper" versions of the songs, which are only available only in FAKE stereo on stereo albums.
VI. The original Beatles mono albums are a terrific investment value, not likely to go the Enron way.

· CONDITION:
· THE RECORD
(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)
(a) WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VG++. A few light abrasions ARE VISIBLE, but they appear fairly insignificant relative to the overall condition of the vinyl, and are only moderately visually distracting. For most part, the vinyl looks impeccable, without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.
(b) The record comes in the Capitol's stock inner sleeve
(c) The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!
(d) Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!
· THE COVER
THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).
The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:
- Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and 10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2 (front side) and 3 (back side)
- Cover shows some yellowing on back side, apparently from aging.
- Visible shelf wear noted on the spine
- Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine and the top seam (nothing significant)
- Cover has a visible "wrinkle"(crease) in one of the corners. (VISIBLE ON BACK SIDE ONLY)
- Cover has one corner slightly worn / dinged (just a beginning of the split seam)
NO OTHER VISIBLE FLAWS OR IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER
