It isn't hard to make the case for Patti Smith as a punk rock progenitor based on her debut album, which anticipated the new wave by a year or so: the simple, crudely played rock & roll, featuring Lenny Kaye's rudimentary guitar work, the anarchic spirit of Smith's vocals, and the emotional and imaginative nature of her lyrics -- all prefigure the coming movement as it evolved on both sides of the Atlantic. Smith is a rock critic's dream, a poet as steeped in '60s garage rock as she is in French Symbolism; "Land" carries on from the Doors' "The End," marking her as a successor to Jim Morrison, while the borrowed choruses of "Gloria" and "Land of a Thousand Dances" are more in tune with the era of sampling than they were in the '70s. Producer John Cale respected Smith's primitivism in a way that later producers did not, and the loose, improvisatory song structures worked with her free verse to create something like a new spoken word/musical art form: Horses was a hybrid, the sound of a post-Beat poet, as she put it, "dancing around to the simple rock & roll song."

(EXCERPT FROM AN ONLINE REVIEW BY WILLIAM RUHLMANN, ALL MUSIC GUIDE  /ALLMUSIC.COM/)

Contrary to popular belief, it wasn't Sex Pistols who started the whole darn Punk thing. The Punk/New Wave was at least 2-3 years in the making, gestating deep in the underbelly of New York, when the bunch of cockneys came to a great idea: let's repackage the whole deal, and sell it as Punk!!! Brilliant deduction, dear Watson. Anyway, people like MC5, Patti Smith, Richard Hell and Ramones were practicing what they were preaching ('new wave') way before it became fashionable – and commercially viable -  in Europe. And here's the proof: this phenomenal 1975 album - produced by the legendary Velvet-Undergrounder John Cale - was literally and figuratively a vortex of New Wave - it's focal point and the proverbial eye of the storm. We cannot possibly say enough good things about Patti Smith. Unlike some other self-anointed feminist rockers, Patti was consistently a woman of heart and mind (or, shall we say: brains), and her infinitely stimulating and intriguing stream-of-consciousness lyrics provide a perfect background to the devil-may-care scorching rock'n'roll provided courtesy of Lenny Kaye & the Band. Easily our favorite album of the 70's (move over Lou, sorry Bruce). And, oh, lest we forget -- the buyer gets the original first version of the cover, with the title of the album in WHITE letters. This version of the cover was discontinued immediately after the first pressing and is at least 20 times tougher to find than the subsequent, black-letter version. A truly classic contribution to the history of Rock'n'Roll and - of this is of any relevance - easily the best female rock album ever made (with a possible exception of some Aretha Franklin works). Track listing: Gloria - Redondo Beach - Birdland - Free Money - Kimberly - Break it up - Land - Elegie.

For its extraordinary contribution to the modern music, superb production, craftsmanship, fine musicianship, revolutionary significance and influence it exerted on numerous generations of musicians, writers and general public, or for some other innate quality, this album was voted one of top-200 albums of all time in one of the largest poll of critics, music reviewers, professionals and producers ever organized: the poll, which was conducted by Paul Gambaccini, legendary BBC Radio A&R man, surveyed more than 50 top music professionals (including Roy Carr, Jonathan Cott, Robert Christgau, Cameron Crowe, Chet Flippo, Ben Fong-Torres, Charlie Gillett, Greil Marcus, Murray the K., Lenny Kaye (yes, Mr. Kaye also played on this album) , Bruce Morrow (a/k/a "Cousin Brucie"), Tim Rice (of "Jesus Christ Superstar" and "Evita" fame), Lisa Robinson, Robert Shelton (who wrote liner notes for Bob Dylan's first album), Ed Ward, Joel Whitburn, Pete Wingfield, etc.). For more details, see: "Critics Choice: Top-200 albums" compiled by Paul Gambaccini, Omnibus Press, Library of Congress Catalog No.7855565.

·                          CONDITION:

·                          THE RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)         WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VG++, JUST A NOTCH BELOW NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions (probably just sleeve scuffs inflicted in storage over the years) ARE VISIBLE, but they appear fairly  insignificant relative to the overall condition of the vinyl, and are only moderately visually distracting. For most part, the vinyl looks impeccable, without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)         The record comes in the original stock inner sleeve.

(a)         Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·      COVER (THIS IS THE ORIGINAL GLOSSY COVER):

COVER IS NEAR MINT,  STILL IN ITS ORIGINAL ►SHRINK WRAP

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-       Cover shows JUST A HINT of yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging.  (nothing significant)

-       Cover has two corners slightly worn / dinged  (just a beginning of the split seam)

-       Minor shelf wear noted on the bottom seam (nothing significant)

NO OTHER VISIBLE FLAWS OR IMPERFECTIONS ON THE  COVER
