There's a mad story behind this 70s funk covers album... East Of Underground were a group of disillusioned GI's waiting to return from Vietnam. Knowing this gives the set a real sense of gravitas. But even if you didn't know that, the covers are a captivating listen, laced with raw unpolished musicianship and emotive harmonies. Highlights include the faltering highs of their version of Carole King and the dusty, crackly grooves of Rare Earth but it's all worth checking. And indeed owning.
