ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This superb gatefold LP from La Voix de son Maitre (C 069-02796, French pressing, dog-in-stamp label, SQ quadraphonic stereo) features violinist Oleg Kagan and pianist Sviatoslav Richter’s supremely eloquent accounts of Beethoven’s Violin Sonatas No. 4 in A minor Op. 23 and No. 5 in F Major Op. 24 “Spring”, recorded at Bürgerbräu Keller, Munich, Germany in March 1976 (producer: John Mordler / engineer: Ernst Rothe).
Wrote the wonderful critic Jed Distler for ClassicsToday.com:
“Those who know the duo's exciting, volatile romp through the Beethoven Op. 24 sonata's opening Presto via their 1975 Live Classics or Intaglio recordings will find the slower 1976 EMI version no less detailed and intense. Also note the variety of inflection throughout the "Spring" sonata's sunny first movement (the repeated-note motive, for example), and the deliciously articulated rhythmic displacements in the little Scherzo.”
The interior panels of the gatefold jacket contain superb liner notes in French (by Philippe Androit) and in English (by Christopher Breunig). The cover photo of Kagan and Richter is uncredited.
CONDITION:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the jacket is EXCELLENT. There is minor bumping/wear at corners, as well as mild discoloration to the right interior panel. However, there are no seamsplits, bends, or owners' markings, and the album remains solid, bright, glossy, and handsome in appearance – overall, an excellent collector's copy.
The condition of the LP itself is near-MINT. Although surfaces are not absolutely silent (and thus I have rated it NM vs. MINT) this is a fine copy and playback is superb. If you must have perfect surfaces, then please do not buy this LP. Overall, this rates as a NM collector's copy.
