The Police were an English band formed in London in 1977. For the vast majority of their history, the band consisted of (, ), () and (). The Police became globally popular in the late 1970s and are generally regarded as one of the first groups to achieve mainstream success, playing a style of rock that was influenced by , , and .

Their 1983 album, , was number one on both the and the US , and sold over 8 million copies in the US. The group disbanded in 1986, but reunited in early 2007 for a one-off lasting until August 2008. Gordon Matthew Thomas Sumner (born 2 October 1951), known by his stage name Sting, is a British musician, singer-songwriter, , activist, actor and philanthropist. Prior to starting his solo career, he was the principal songwriter, lead singer and bassist for the band .

Sting has varied his musical style throughout his career, incorporating distinct elements of , , , , and into his music.
