GRADING - CONDITION
Overall I give this 78 an E- rating. Although not a perfect record it has been well cared for and stored in a heavy brown sleeve which is included.
There is a small lebel tear on one side, see photo.
The main flaw in this record, on the "Melancholy Mood" side, is a 1 1/2 inch scuff, which for the most part does not affect the play, see photo.
It plays through this scuff with only a few light clicks.
Also on the "Bottom Of My Heart" side, near the end, there is a small "bump" in the surface, which again causes a few light clicks or ticks.
The grooves appear in good condition, and was probably not played that much.
Overall the record has good shine with a few other minor / light scuffs or marks which in no way affect the play.
There is a light to moderate, steady static noise, throughout the play, with the music and singing coming through loud and clear.
This was checked with a Stanton 681 cartridge and 78 needle tracking at 2 1/2 grams. There were no skips.
NOTE OF COMPARISON
Recently I purchased two different 78s from longtime sellers with high ratings. One was graded V+, the other E-. This Frank Sinatra 78 is in better shape than either of those by comparison. I believe most collectors would be very satisfied with this E- rating.
SHIPPING
I will only ship to the contiguous U.S. Shipping will be in at least a 13x13x6 box, with heavy carboard protectors and lots of bubble wrap. I do not ship 78s in LP mailers. It will be shipped with a tracking number and insured. Shipping is free to U.S. No Saturday shipping.
MORE INFO ON THE RECORD
This was in a collection of 78s that included over one hundred FRANK SINATRAS' (most Columbia). They were all kept in heavy brown sleeves and well cared for. Most like this one are clean and shiny with very few scratched or damaged.
My plan (God willing) is to sell these in five or six record lots for Buy It Now in the very near future.
THE GRADING SCALE
Nere's the grading scale used (that I "borrowed" from another listing)
E+. Plays like new, with very, very few signs of handling, such as tiny scuffs from being slipped in and out of jackets (never used).
E. Still very shiny, near new looking, with no visible signs of wear, but a few inaudible scuffs and scratches (seldom used; no scratches).
E-. Still shiny but without the lustre of a new record, few light scratches (usually very shiny and minimal surface noise).
V+. V+ is an average condition 78 in which scuffs and general use has dulled the finish somewhat. Wear is moderate but playing is generally free from distortion. Surface noise not overly pronounced (an extra + is sometimes given for a record that plays like an E-, but looks like a V+).
V. Moderate, even wear throughout, but still very playable. Surface noise and scratches audible but not intrusive (visible signs of wear, noisy [moreso when played on modern equipment], chips, torn labels, other defects).
V-. Quite playable still, but distortion and heavy greying in loud passages. Music remains loud in most passages. Surface noise and scratches well below music level.
G+. Grey throughout but still serviceable. Music begins to sound muffled. Heavy scratches (seldom used).
G. Quite seriously worn and scratched, but music level is still higher than surface noise (seldom used, generally for highly collectable records).
G-. Music still prominent, but wear and scatch damage extensive (ditto).
