"After serving as road manager for the and meeting , singer/guitarist Dave Mason found fame as one of the founding members of the jazz/rock/pop fusion group . However, conflicts between and Mason over the group's direction led to the latter's departure in 1969 after three albums. Mason moved to Los Angeles and joined before beginning his solo career. His 1970 solo debut, , went gold and is, arguably, his best album. Mason next collaborated with for , but its reception was lukewarm at best. Mason settled permanently in America in 1973 and signed a long-term contract with CBS, recording a series of moderately successful, often inconsistent pop/rock albums featuring originals and a sprinkling of covers. Mason scored his biggest solo hit in 1977 with "We Just Disagree," which reached number 12."

"Dave Mason's first solo album was one of several recordings to come out of the / axis in 1970. (Other notables included 's solo debut and 's .) Alone Together contains an excellent batch of melodically pleasing songs, built on a fat bed of strumming acoustic guitars with tasteful electric guitar accents and leads. Mason's vocals are embellished with harmonies from , , and . Besides the well-known semi-hit "Only You Know and I Know," and which was also a number 20 hit for , highlights include the bouncy gospel-inflected "Waitin' on You" and the banjo-bejeweled "Just a Song." "Look at You Look at Me" and the wonderfully wah-wahed "Shouldn't Have Took More Than You Gave" are reminiscent of Mason's former band, , whose drummer, is among the all-star cast assembled here. Alone Together represents Dave Mason at his peak. Later releases would betray lyrical shallowness, forced rhymes, and clichéd guitar licks. But here, everything comes together perfectly."

Dave Mason was instrumental (get it? Guitars, instruments... aw forget it!) in getting me interested in playing guitar. I was 15 in 1971 when Dave showed me some of his licks one time in Mannys, a guitar shop in New York City. My first electric guitar was a no-name instrument that came with a whammy bar, a fine piece of junk made in.... well, let's just say it did not last very long!

Back-To-Earth Dept: This is a fine example of high-grade Audiophile Vinyl, a REISSUE of the original album that is absolutely BETTER than the 1970 pressing!! This special pressing is remastered from the original analog master tapes, giving you an almost duplicate of the first 1970 Blue Thumb release. There was no noise supppression and no Bass roll-off which guarantees you will get that accurate 1970's Rock sound we all loved way-back when! It's pressed on thicker, 180-gram virgin vinyl so your record will last much longer and resist warping! You get deluxe inner sleeves and the Original Artwork and Liner Notes! GRADING SCALE

I use a Universal Grading System to describe the quality of the LP albums and 45 singles that I sell. I grade records under strong, diffused room light or discreet sunlight. I do not use stock photos for my ads; all of my scans are of the Item You See! You get no surprises from me!

 

NOTE: Please keep in mind that when I describe any LP, I am referring to its Original Year Of Release, NOT the year that the LP was printed! In many cases, the year that a given LP was printed is unknown. When in doubt, PLEASE ASK me! Thank You!

 

 All of my LP’s are stored upright in a SMOKE-FREE ENVIRONMENT! 

SS Mint (M): Album is New, Still Sealed and has never been played.

Mint (M): The vinyl has no noticeable scratches, fingerprints or defects and looks like it has never been played, although there may be use at the spindle hole. The cover has no noticeable wear or defects. There may be very slight curling of the right side corners of the cover due to shrink wrap pressure. May still have it’s original shrink wrap. MINT does not mean "perfect". Near Mint (NM): Almost Mint vinyl with perhaps a few visual imperfections that should not affect the sound of the record. Cover is nice looking with little or no ring wear and may still have its original shrink wrap.

VG++: Vinyl has some signs of wear; very clean, only light surface marks which will not distract significantly from the sound, but perhaps a little static, some snaps or pops. Cover may have some signs of wear, perhaps some ringwear but is still in nice collectible condition, solid with no cuts,holes or splits.

VG+: Played often with moderate surface wear and some moderate noise, static, pops or skips - still plays well. Cover may have significant overall wear and ring wear. VG: Overall wear, more noisy sound during quiet passages, a lot of static and many skips that require lifting the needle. Cover is well worn, usually with considerable ring wear. may have cuts, holes, cut corners. May have taped edges. The lowest grade.

In my opinion, the grade of “Mint” and the word “Mint” does not equal Perfection. The grade of Perfection does not exist, as far as I know. Different phono cartridges and stereo setups, condition of the needle and if the record is cleaned before playing (or not cleaned) affects the way a vinyl record sounds. You can look at a record with the naked eye and not see micro imperfections which might affect the music and the sound. There are just too many variables. I listen to records after cleaning them. If I do not hear skips or pops or snaps and I do not see noticeable scratches, then as far as I am concerned, that record is Mint. Be very careful not to compare my grading standards with those of others. I do not use Goldmine and to compare my grades to Goldmine is not really fair. Remember, it's always best to ask questions BEFORE bidding!
