Alasdair Gray (born 28 December 1934) is a Scottish  and . His most acclaimed work is his first novel, , published in 1981 and written over a period of almost 30 years. It is now regarded as a classic, and was described by  as "one of the landmarks of 20th-century fiction." His novel  (1992) won the  and the . He describes himself as a and a .

Gray's works combine elements of , , and , plus clever use of  and his own . He has also written on , in support of  and , and on the history of English literature.
