TICO ALL-STARS

 DESCARGAS AT THE VILLAGE GATE

VOL.1 VOL.2 & VOL.3

Originally published by the Tico label in an edition of three LPs, this album KING of all discharges, was recorded live on a Monday night May 23, 1966 at the Village Gate in New York.

An explosive soirée, in terms of competition, spirit and rhythm, was organized by a local DJ, Symphony Sid, and the president of Tico Records, Morris Levy. A traveling night with the police force fences controlling the people who stood outside - some say it was more people than had inside-. It was a night of fellowship and celebration for the New York Latin scene.

True ALL STARS, including musicians that towards the end of the decade would become beacons of Latin music: Joe Cuba on congas, kingpin Candido Camero on congas, Eddie Palmieri on piano, timpani Tito Puente, Ray Barretto on congas, the future musical director of Fania Records Johnny Pacheco on flute, Monguito (not to be confused with Mongo Santamaria) on vocals and others.
