One of the most famous and acclaimed records in the history of popular music, Purple Rain was released in 1984, and served the dual purpose of being Prince’s sixth studio album and the soundtrack to the film of the same name. The two main songs from Purple Rain, When Doves Cry and Let's Go Crazy, topped the US singles charts and were hits around the world, but it’s the classic closing title track that’s perhaps become the record’s defining, ubiquitous moment. Utterly essential.
