Having contributed to some of the most acclaimed records of recent years, from Flying Lotus's Cosmogramma to Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp a Butterfly, aptly named opus The Epic marked the moment Kamasi Washington emerged from the shadows with his own masterpiece.
Clocking in at 172 minutes, and spread over three volumes, The Epic houses a 32-piece orchestra, a 20-person choir and 17 songs overlaid with a compositional score written by Washington. Pulsing underneath is an otherworldly ten-piece band, each member of which is individually regarded as among the best young musicians on the planet, including bassist Thundercat and his brother, drummer Ronald Bruner Jr. Truly, one of the great jazz achievements of recent times.
