The Last Time I Did Acid I Went Insane and Other Favorites isn't a great departure from New York's the Moldy Peaches -- Jeffrey Lewis had once provided illustrations for the band -- but it does thrive on its own range of isolated humor and touchingly lonely autobiographical observation. Lewis' subjects aren't as childish as some might expect: Amidst the comic-strip stories of golden arms and zombie murder, a theme of grief, frustration, and social inadequacy reappears. Keeping the music faded and introspective, Lewis creates empathy where others have relied on shtick.
