A collection of bubbly if angst-ridden early punk-pop-inspired tunes, the spirit of All of Something is well represented by the album's D.I.Y., slacker cover photo and similarly indifferent title. The sophomore album of Sports, a group of Ohio Kenyon College students who indicated that they may well have split for good after finishing college and this album, it was recorded in Philadelphia with producer Kyle Gilbride, who's worked with the comparable-sounding Waxahatchee. Loose, jangly, and uptempo, it offers song titles like "Clean Socks," "Get Bummed Out," and "Reality TV," which reflect the period of uncertain futures, going through the motions, and unsteady romance that marks many a senior year. The aloofness of singer Carmen Perry's vocal tone only amplifies the record's ennui ("But I can go if you feel like giving up/Just make a mess of me, I'll always clean it up"), which is peppered with references to being stuck in a small town ("At night the lights are on but the people aren't around"). The punky energy of caffeinated drums and driving basslines and the mix of rhythmically churning and sweetly melodic guitars keep the mood incongruously upbeat, as on "The Washing Machine," an easygoing whirl with twangy guitar amid anxious lyrics that fear abandonment. Together, everything works like a charm, and the biggest complaint to be had is that the ten tracks fly by at well under 30 minutes, an abrupt ending to a swell record and, possibly, a promising band. ~ Marcy Donelson
