COMMENT BY "THE VERTIGO SWIRL LABEL RECORD COLLECTOR GUIDE": "This is one of Vertigo's finest hours. It's progressive rock from Scotland, no less, but it carefully avoids almost all the irritating traits of that genre. The mellow, emotional singing is free from mannerisms, and the compositions are among the most moving in this realm. The production allows room for everyone, and the playing manages to be refined - even restrained - without sacrificing any of its splendor. Another point in its favor is the fact that there is a great variety of approach, both instrumentally and stylistically; and yet the sound is immediately recognizable. Striding from one climax to the next in a stately manner, this album still stands as one of the highlights of early British prog; it is a record which proves that aspirations do not necessarily turn into pretensions. Near Mint value: 800 - 1200 EUR"
CONDITION: (Please note I use the Record Collector's grading guide standards - see below!)
RECORD: The record is overall in EXCELLENT condition and looks almost near mint! The record has kept most of its original black glossy shine and has only the tiniest hairlines from sleeve removal, which are only visible under a very strong light! The record plays great and still has very nice, rich sound with just some slight background noise in the run-in areas and in the quiter parts... However this is BARELY NOTICEABLE! Absolutely a stunning copy that has well stood the test of time and that WAS WELL TAKEN CARE OF!
SLEEVE: The sleeve is in VERY GOOD condition and is in nice shape overall. The cover has no major issues and is in great condition, apart from just some minor issues: There is the normal shelf wear on the edges and on the spine of the cover, as one would expect for a record that has been stored for this many years. Apart from this there is one little tear on the upper left corner of the front cover, as well as some tiny creases and some small tears on the inside of the gatefold (SEE PICTURES!). The gatefold sleeve also has some sticky residues all over the edges, as can be seen on the pictures. You can also see that the front cover has faded a bit on the left side, which is also normal shelf wear. Apart from these minor issues, one could easily grade the sleeve as VERY GOOD PLUS. However, as a way of precaution I only grade it as VERY GOOD! The swirl inner sleeve is present and is in GOOD condition, with some creases and small tears as can be seen on the pictures.
RECORD COLLECTOR'S GRADING GUIDE:
The record itself is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality. The cover and any extra items such as the lyric sheet, booklet or poster are in perfect condition. Records advertised as Sealed or Unplayed should be Mint.
The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality. The cover and packaging might have slight wear and / or creasing.
The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items, without any major defects, is acceptable.
The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discolouration, etc.
The record is still just playable but has not been cared for properly and displays considerable surface noise; it may even jump. The cover and contents will be torn, stained and / or defaced.
The record will not play properly due to scratches, bad surface noise, etc. The cover and contents will be badly damaged or partly missing.
The record is unplayable or might even be broken, and is only of use as a collection filler."
As well as the above grades, is often used as well; this is really for a record that appears new but is known to have been played because the label has light spindle marks or because it has come from a previous owner and is assumed to have been played by them. For records which appear to fall between the accepted grades, + and - are also often added to the grading. (Please note this grading is placed in between EXCELLENT and MINT)
