The Smiths excelled in bucking trends.  While the rest of England was infatuated with new-wave synthesizer pop and other transient movements at the outset of the 1980s, the Smiths came along with a more traditional guitar sound that seemed strangely out of place.  But their songs, enhanced by Johnny Marr's exquisite guitar playing and Morrissey's sharp lyrics, were so captivating that the group didn't really need to fit in.  Embracing poetry and a sound closer to the beat groups of the '60s, the Smiths laid the groundwork for modern alternative rock.  In just four years, the group released an abundance of original material in various formats, all of it consistently solid. 

'The Queen Is Dead' was originally released by The Smiths in 1986 on Sire Records; it represents the Smiths' artistic peak, blending an impeccable set of songs with Morrissey's exceptional wit and Marr's most accomplished guitar playing.  The version offered in this listing is the highly regarded Rhino vinyl reissue from 2009 (R1 520967) The remastering was overseen by Johnny Marr and the results are clearly superior to the initial 1986 pressing. There is more detail and separation in the instruments and the equalization is outstanding.  Now out of print, it is the most sought after pressing in the entire Smiths catalog.
