An exclusive for Record Store Day this 10inch EP brings together the first two That Petrol Emotion singles from 1985, their debut “Keen” originally released on The Pink Label and the follow up ‘V2” on Noiseanoise.
This ‘In The Beginning... EP’ also includes 4 track demos of those two singles and ‘Happiness Drives Me Round The Bend’ which was originally called ‘Tender Trap’ but had a name change at the last minute.
Packaged in a reworking of the 12inch cover of V2, the EP includes brand new inner bag artwork and sleeve notes from Damian and John O’Neill, Steve Mack, Reamann Gorman and Ciaran McLaughlin.
After the pure indie popesque sound of the Undertones, John & Damian O’Neill found a new adventure with That Petrol Emotion. A starker contrast you could not find. Musically darker and edgy the band were far more outspoken politically than the Undertones ever were.
With influences ranging from Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band; this EP includes a cover of Beefhearts “Zig Zag Wanderer” which was originally on the 12inch of “Keen”. To The Beatles, Television, Sly & The Family Stone and Can they were far more diverse free from the constraints of the commercial tethers that bound The Undertones.
Media praise was heady too, from a youthful Rolling Stones to a revved up Television or The Clash crossed with Creedence the band felt liber- ated and energised by their newfound freedom and excitement.
Radio 1’s John Peel was big supporter and the band signed to Demon Records and released their debut album ‘Manic Pop Thrill’ which charted No1 in the UK Indie Chart.
