Please check below for a guide to our gradings. It's worth noting that there is sometimes no correlation between the sound of a record and the record's appearance.
We have yet to find a shellac disc that doesn't play with surface noise. It should also be noted that your personal playback experience will be dependent on the stylus/equipment used.
Visual Grading (viewed under a strong light): A = A few surface marks, possibly some light wear and very light scratches. Surface is nice and shiny. B = A number of surface marks, visible wear and some light scratches. Surface retains shine. C = Many surface marks, visible wear and a number of light/medium scratches. Surface retains some shine. D = Numerous surface marks, significant wear and possible some deep scratches. Surface may be dull. E = Badly worn with deep scratches. Dull surface.
Audio Grading (tested with Rega RB78 stylus/cartridge. Your playback experience may well differ with other styli/equipment): A = Relatively low surface noise. Some crackling throughout but the music is the winner. B = Surface noise/crackling throughout. However, the music is still prominent above the background noise. C = Significant levels of surface noise/crackling and pops. The music is still audible and louder passages rise above the background noise. D = High levels of surface noise. The music is just about audible through the crackling. May be some distorted passages. E = Extreme surface noise and distortion throughout. Not an easy listen.
Label Grading (please zoom in on the images to study the label): A = In very good condition with no significant marking or wear. No writing or stickers. B = Some light wear or marking. No writing or stickers. C = Wear and marking. Some small areas of the label may be worn away or missing. Some stickers and/or neat writing may be present. D = Significant wear. Larger areas of the label may be worn away or missing. Writing and/or stickers may be present. E = Label is badly damaged.
