The record gradings guide I have set out below are in line with various guide books.
Ex (Excellent): Healthy, shiny playing surfaces. Shows some signs of being played with perhaps faint hairlines and/or extremely light marks but there is very little lessening in sound quality. Near silent run-ins and minimal unwanted noises throughout. Cover & inners might have extremely light wear and/or creasing. No splits or repairs. Posters will be crisp and clean. Lyric sheets may have mild edge discolouration. Record labels may show light signs of spindle travel.
VG+ (Very Good Plus): Has been played and handled with care over the years. No significant deterioration in sound quality despite some visible light surface marks and light scratches. Occasional light static-like noise may be audible on quiet tracks, intros, outros & between tracks but no loud clicks, skips, pops. Some very light wear & tear on cover & inner may be present but without any major defects . Cover /Inner sleeve may have very minor repairs but NO visible celotape, board tears, ink writing, coffee/beer stains, etc. Posters & lyric sheets will be intact and show only mild wear and tear (e.g. from folding). Labels may have light spindle wear but be undamaged.
VG (Very Good): Played many times but quite carefully so no major deterioration in sound quality. There may be some visible light surface marks/scuffs/rubs and and very light scratches but none of these should interfere significantly with playback. No deep scratches which cause loud clicks, jumps, stylus damage. Regular wear and tear on cover/inner as associated with age, usage and storage but with no major defects. There may be unobtrusive penned annotation e.g. previous owners initials present on the cover but no significant defacing. Posters may show moderate signs of pre-hanging (pinholes) , oil stains (blu-tack), a corner torn. Clean labels.
Gd+ (Good Plus): Generally a well used item. Playing surfaces will have many small scratches some of which may be felt so the sound quality will have deteriorated although still audible . No skips or jumps. Cover, labels and contents may variously suffer from repairs, annotations, scuffing, discolouration. Posters & lyric sheets may be badly stained, corners torn or totally missing. Labels may be torn, scuffed or annotated.
Gd (Good): A well used record and unloved cover. Sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion. Many mild scratches which are audible. Cover and/or inner suffer from edge wear, edge splits, creasing, discolouration etc. Labels may be torn, scuffed or annotated. Any posters or lyric sheets will be missing.
