Ten Minute Warning: the lost months December 1982-May 1983 Five songs recorded with Duff on drums at the studio at American Music November 15,1982. Released on cassette title “Survival of the Fittest”. Limited run of 50 cassettes with last song being cut short. Later versions of the band are credited with these five songs. These five songs are the last and only songs recorded with the lineup consisting of Steve Fart-bass, Paul Solger-guitar, Duff McKagan-drums, Blaine Fart-vocals. While these songs were recorded as the fartz. Most people have come to recognize them as ten minute warning songs. The song buried alive appeared under the Fartz banner on the Eastern Front compilation. The song buried alive also appeared on the Smoke Seven Buried Alive compilation under the ten minute warning banner. The songs is this the way, judgement day and buried alive appeared on the Lung Cookies compilation under the ten minute warning banner. The recordings complied for this release include one song recorded in Blaine’s mother’s basement. One of the few times the band rehearsed as ten minute warning with Steve Fart still playing bass. Half of a rehearsal recorded on a Aiwa boom box. The tape was at one point leant out and accidently on side got recorded over. We lifted the audio from show at La Bambas. For good measure the five-song recording is also included. Many of these songs were re-used, recycled and re-purposed. These recordings show some of the songs in their infancy. Last Fartz gig at the Metropolis in Portland on November 27th , 1982. Also, on the bill were Poison Idea, The Rejectors and the Accused. With the help of Jeff “spook” Ramsey the band shared a large and cavernous space in Belltown in the alley between first and second ave. A few rehearsals were also held in a freight elevator near Seattle U. A pretty good stretch of jams in the basement of Raylene Rice’s mother’s basement near the Woodland Park Zoo. By this time Duff had moved to second guitar. Greg Gilmore was playing drums. Paul Solger on lead guitar and Blaine Fart on the vocal duties. A bass player was needed to round out the lineup. Alex Maggotbrain came in to try out. He was a bit to edgy for the band. David Garrigues was brought on for bass duties. On a side note Blaine went to school and was acquainted with David during their freshmen year at Roosevelt High School 1976-1977. David was a member of the Ride On Skateboard Team. The first show we can trace of the band playing was on March 12, 1983 at the Crossroads Roller Rink w/ Culprit and Kidskin and Air Guitar Contest. April 2, 1983 at Washington Hall w/the rejectors, the accused, firing squad and the boot boys. Very low-quality video footage of this show exists on YouTube. A string of three shows with the Dead Kennedy’s in April of 1983. April 22 at the Eagles Hippodrome in Seattle. April 23 at the SUB Ballroom on University of BC campus in Vancouver, BC. April 26th at La Bambas in Portland w/poison idea also on the bill (this show was videotaped for a local public access show, the footage can be found on You Tube). The band was very grateful for the continued support of Jello Biafra. Sometime near the end of May 1983 the band played a show at the Kid Dome (a day care center) in Gig Harbor. The other bands on the show were the Fastbacks and the Silly Killers. Lance Mercer reportedly took some photos that evening. A few days after that show Blaine was removed from the band as was replaced by Steve Swad/Verwolf. The fartz did get together one more time on July 4, 1983 to play at Munro’s Dance Palace in Seattle. Urban legend says that the dayglo abortions also played the show. Lots and lots of firecrackers. This would the second and last time that the fartz played with Duff on the drums. The names of many of these songs have been lost forever. We’ve included every little bit of recorded material including the between song banter. Just to make the time capsule complete. Yes, there are some songs you’ll get some different versions. The band continued for some years. They had a few different bass players and played numerous shows. The sound changed with the removal of Blaine’s mono-tone simplistic singing style. The recording made with Steve Swad/Verwolf was never released. In 1998 the band did put out a release on Subpop titled ten minute warning. In memory of Steve Fart without him none of this would've happened.
