GODFREY – THE TRIP / COME ON, COME ON (CEE-JAM 3) (VG+)

From Los Angeles, CA, the amazing trend-setter Kim Fowley decided to write, record and release The Trip in 1965 on a single on the Corby label.  The content certainly wasn’t very subtle, and at that point in time LSD was still legal. But even one year later I can’t imagine any producers letting a song like this slip through the censor cracks. Fowley’s version did well enough on local LA radio that a local KTYM DJ, Godfrey, opted to release a cover of the song just a short four months after Fowley’s version came out. The Fowley rendition was the real deal, with the hallucinogenic imagery sounding genuine from the king tripper himself.  But Godfrey’s version sounds more like an older guy trying to be way too hip. Regardless, Fowley’s version got on Pebbles Volume 1 and Godfrey’s was on Pebbles Vol. 2!  Godfrey originally released the single with an alternate take of The Trip called Let’s Take a Trip on the flip side which was essentially just a variation on his improv rap over the same backing track.  For some reason he then released a version with a different flip-side, Come On, Come On, which is credited to “Godfrey’s Group” and is a not-so-interesting instrumental song. Both the Fowley 45 and the original Godfrey 45 are quite rare finds these days, and this version is moderately rare.  This copy has some mild audible distortion (hiss) on both sides, but I think it’s the pressing, because the Pebbles version has similar if not the exact same flaws. This copy has a few scuffs, but is in very good condition, graded VG+. Check out the scans and audio samples.

Hi folks, this is Velvetfogg, founder of the U-SPACES music collective which ran from 1997 to 2020 on Yahoogroups and has now switched over to Facebook.  The primary focus of U-SPACES was to provide a network of Psych & Garage music aficionados to build and share compilations of non comped songs. Over the past 40 years I have amassed a large 45 & LP collection which I am now choosing to put up for auction to help fund my kid’s college educations.  Generally speaking, I am only putting things up for auction that are either in excellent condition or extremely rare.

My preference is to run these auctions on EBAY because of familiarity with the process, but there is the potential that I will switch or use other platforms in parallel in the future.  Check out my collection on DISCOGS under VELVETFOGG. I have only listed 45’s on that site that I plan to auction in 2021/22 and the list will grow substantially on a weekly basis as I continue to go through my collection. I hope to list 10 records per week for EBAY auctions on Sundays.

GRADING SCALE:

NM/M: Played once or twice. No visible surface or playback wear.

EX: Has been played but has no scratches, minimal to no wear and plays without surface noise.

EX- Plays without surface noise, but might have a few visible minor scratches.

VG++: May have a few surface scratches or a little wear, but plays nicely with only minimal surface noise and clicks. No Skips

VG+: "Typical used record".  A little wear, a few minor (light) scratches, but plays well. Surface noise may be more present during soft passages. No Skips

VG: More wear and significant surface noise. Deeper scratches. May have a skip and will be noted.

G: Significant surface noise and scratches and visible groove wear. (Beat up record!) May have skips if noted.
