Vinyl:  VG++ Play Graded. Sounds Great!  Has some marks that don't affect the sound quality.  Capitol Labels are Clean and Bright.  This is the 1965 Capitol Release.  SW-2442.  This is the audiophile acclaimed Winchester, PA STEREO Pressing!!  Quintessential Late Middle Period Beatles:  Still in the throes of Beatlemania, the Lads release their most mature album to date. Many breakthroughs here with the sitar on Norwegian Wood, their first foray into Hippie-dom with "The Word", and the influence of Dylan on "Girl" and "In My Life".  Plus, the minor masterpiece of "Michelle"...not a dud on here. One of Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time!!...Allmusic gives it 5 stars! See Review Below!
In the Dead Wax:  Side 1:    ST-1-2442-H17#3   and the glyph for Capitol's Winchester, PA Pressing Plant Side 2:  SW-2-2442-H32  "MASTERED BY CAPITOL"   and the glyph for Capitol's Winchester, PA Pressing Plant        Cover: VG++ (see photos).  Iconic Original Cover by Robert Freeman which shows the Boys slightly elongated from a happy mistake that happened when Freeman was projecting slides on an album sized piece of cardboard to see which of them the boys wanted.  As the story goes, the cardboard slipped on its easel slightly causing the iconic image we see today.  Front and back of cover artwork and text are rich, clear and bright, with minimal wear.  Seams and corners are solid, with some wear.  No splits.  Spine print is clear (although they oddly chose to print black words on a dark background, making it hard to see the words).

Why buy a first or early pressing and not a re-issue or a ‘re-mastered’ vinyl album?  First and early pressings are pressed from the first generation lacquers and stampers. They usually sound vastly superior to later issues/re-issues (which, in recent times, are often pressed from whatever 'best' tapes or digital sources are currently available) - many so-called 'audiophile' new 180g pressings are cut from hi-res digital sources…essentially an expensive CD pressed on vinyl.  Why  experience the worse elements of both formats?  These are just High Maintenance CDs, with mid-ranges so cloaked with a veil as to sound smeared.  They are nearly always compressed with murky transients and a general lifelessness in the overall sound.  There are exceptions where re-masters/re-presses outshine the original issues, but they are exceptions and not the norm.  First or early pressings nearly always have more immediacy, presence and dynamics. The sound staging is wider.  Subtle instrument nuances are better placed with more spacious textures. Balances are firmer in the bottom end with a far-tighter bass. Upper-mid ranges shine without harshness, and the overall depth is more immersive.  Inner details are  clearer.   On first and early pressings, the music tends to sound more ‘alive’ and vibrant.  The physics of sound energy is hard to clarify and write about from a listening perspective, but the best we can describe it is to say that you can 'hear' what the mixing and mastering engineers wanted you to hear when they first recorded the music.     AllMusic Review by Richie Unterberger

While  still largely stuck to love songs on , the lyrics represented a quantum leap in terms of thoughtfulness, maturity, and complex ambiguities. Musically, too, it was a substantial leap forward, with intricate folk-rock arrangements that reflected the increasing influence of  and . The group and  were also beginning to expand the conventional instrumental parameters of the rock group, using a sitar on "Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)," Greek-like guitar lines on "Michelle" and "Girl," fuzz bass on "Think for Yourself," and a piano made to sound like a harpsichord on the instrumental break of "In My Life." While  and  were beginning to carve separate songwriting identities at this point, the album is full of great tunes, from "Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)" and "Michelle" to "Girl," "I'm Looking Through You," "You Won't See Me," "Drive My Car," and "Nowhere Man" (the last of which was the first  song to move beyond romantic themes entirely).  was also developing into a fine songwriter with his two contributions, "Think for Yourself" and the  "If I Needed Someone."
