THE CURFEW – PHOTOGENIC JENNY / WAIT FOR THE MOMENT (UNITED ARTISTS SUA 50651) (PROMO) (STEREO) (VG++)
From Maryland, Stephen Geyer spent the early 60’s in England while his father was stationed there, started out as a pre-teen folk duo with his brother and then tried a few attempts at rock & roll bands as a teenager in the UK. They moved back to Maryland circa 1967 and he started a popular local band called Curfew in which he played bass & vocals. As High School kids, they somehow managed to get a contract with United Artists in 1968 for a full LP and a single recorded in New York City. The single features the absolute psych-rock classic Photogenic Jenny which has a Vanilla Fudge flavor to it with lots of fuzz guitar and organ. The flip side, Wait for the Moment is another top notch composition with less fuzz and a bit more pop. Both songs were written by Geyer at the age of 17 or 18. These two songs were part of the full LP session, which was far less ambitious. The LP was produced by Hank Hunter and Neil Levenson, who were both the proverbial “out of touch” older generation trying to guide the meandering youth. The net result of their involvement was that the album included a lot of re-worked covers and only includes a few more high points, with the two songs on the single being definitively the best tracks. There must have been some push-back on the name of the band, because the single references the LP as being titled “The Curfew.” But somehow at the 11th hour, the cover came out as “Curfew - Let There Be Dark; And There Was Dark,” even though the label on the LP just says “The Curfew.” Unfortunately, the single and LP bombed as did so many from that era, and Geyer was forced to find a new direction. As it turns out, he went on to be a very successful TV theme song composer in the 80’s & 90’s. This promo copy grades visually as VG++/EX-, but both sides play as EX. Check out the scans and audio samples.

Hi folks, this is Velvetfogg, founder of the U-SPACES music collective which ran from 1997 to 2020 on Yahoogroups and has now switched over to Facebook. The primary focus of U-SPACES was to provide a network of Psych & Garage music aficionados to build and share compilations of non comped songs. Over the past 40 years I have amassed a large 45 & LP collection which I am now choosing to put up for auction to help fund my kid’s college educations. Generally speaking, I am only putting things up for auction that are either in excellent condition or extremely rare.
My preference is to run these auctions on EBAY because of familiarity with the process, but there is the potential that I will switch or use other platforms in parallel in the future. Check out my collection on DISCOGS under VELVETFOGG. I have only listed 45’s on that site that I plan to auction in 2021/22 and the list will grow substantially on a weekly basis as I continue to go through my collection. I hope to list 10 records per week for EBAY auctions on Sundays.
