WEST COAST NATURAL GAS – GO RUN AND PLAY / A FAVOR (SAN FRANCISCO SOUNDS-2048) (VG++)

Originally from Seattle, Washington, WCNG was formed in 1964 and played in the Northwest for quite a few years with a handful of personnel changes.  At some point in 1967, they were approached by a “scout” sent by Matthew Katz for the purpose of hunting down more talent for his turbulent empire in San Francisco.  The band was convinced to travel to the SF Bay Area to meet and play for Katz.  He was duly impressed and quickly got them into Coast Recording studio to record this extremely powerful double-sided single.  Both sides are unbelievable, with driving, complex, psych masterpieces on both sides. After this single, Katz continued to record more songs by them and re-named them Indian Puddin’ and Pipe (a name he thought of in a “dream” and didn’t have a band to fit the name yet.) He included four fantastic IP&P songs on his 1968 LP compilation The Fifth Pipe Dream for which he now completely owned the naming rights. During these sessions lead guitarist Steve Mack had enough of the charade and was the first to splinter off, with most of the other members soon to follow.  Katz didn’t really care and retained only Pat Craig from the original lineup and continued the IP&P saga with a completely new set of players and a very different sound.  This copy is in great shape, graded as VG++ and plays as EX-. Check out the scans and audio samples.
