SOUND 70 – ONE TOO MANY MOURNINGS /CHICAGO BLUES (MIJJI M-3004) THE (VG/VG+)

From The San Francisco Bay area, this band started out as The Bundles in the mid 60’s and recorded two unreleased songs for Autumn Records. As Sound 70, they played live in the San Mateo area, but there is no poster evidence that they ever elevated to the Ballroom circuit. They released two 45’s in 1967 on the obscure Mijji label, with this being their second. Their first single features a fantastic sang called There is No Reason, which is in the garage-psych vein. On this single, One Too Many Mournings is a Bob Dylan song originally released on The Times They Are A Changin’ LP, but you can scarcely tell it’s the same song.  This version is an incredible powerhouse folk-rock-psych hybrid that is truly amazing. It’s not clear if the misspelling of “Mornings” was intentional or a typo. The flip side, Chicago Blues, is exactly what the title implies, with some seriously syncopated drumming going on. They certainly give The Blues Project or Steve Miller Band a run for their money on this song and someone in the band plays a mean harmonica. The song abruptly ends just as it builds into the point where you would expect a guitar solo.  This copy is in decent shape, graded visually as VG/VG+, but plays closer to VG++ on both sides. Check out the scans and audio samples.
