THE NOCTURNALS – BECAUSE YOU’RE GONE / CAN IT BE TRUE (REGENCY R-959) (VG/VG+)

From Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, this band formed in the late 50’s but didn’t produce any singles until 1965.  This was their first of five singles circa 65/67. They traveled to a studio in Seattle to do their recordings at the same general time period The Sonics and The Wailers were using the same studio.  Because You’re Gone is pretty much a rip-off the "Peter Gunn" riff (with new lyrics), and has some tasteful use of horns and that classic 1965 garage lead guitar tone.  The flip side, Can It Be True, is more of a teen tearjerker ballad and with melancholy harmonica and set in a minor key.  Both songs were co-written by two women that were part of the band’s fan club. It was right around this time that the band got to play as back-up band for Glen Campbell for a full week at the Pacific National Exhibition in Vancouver, PNE Gardens Auditorium.  In 1966 they had four songs included on an LP called Live From the Grooveyard, featuring bands that played at this local Vancouver club with the same name.  However, the tracks were all recorded in the studio with overdubbed crowd sounds!  After that LP cameo, the group recorded four more singles and hit their apex when they were invited to play at Expo ’67 in Montreal, Canada.  A retrospective CD/DVD of all of their material was released in 2006.  This copy is in decent condition graded visually at VG/VG+ but plays closer to VG++ on both sides.  Check out the scans and audio samples.

NM/M: Played once or twice. No visible surface or playback wear.

EX: Has been played but has no scratches, minimal to no wear and plays without surface noise.

EX- Plays without surface noise, but might have a few visible minor scratches.

VG++: May have a few surface scratches or a little wear, but plays nicely with only minimal surface noise and clicks. No Skips

VG+: "Typical used record".  A little wear, a few minor (light) scratches, but plays well. Surface noise may be more present during soft passages. No Skips

VG: More wear and significant surface noise. Deeper scratches. May have a skip and will be noted.

G: Significant surface noise and scratches and visible groove wear. (Beat up record!) May have skips if noted.
