A song by American singer Madonna from her 3rd studio album True Blue ('86) later on compilation albums, The Immaculate Collection ('90), Something to Remember ('95) & Celebration (2009). She decided to use it for then-husband Sean Penn's film, At Close Range. Madonna wrote all the lyrics, co-composed the melodies & co-produced it. A pop ballad, its lyrics deal with deceit, mistrust & childhood scars. It is acclaimed by critics, who frequently refer to it as the best ballad of her career. A commercial success, it became her 3rd #1 single on the USA Billboard Hot 100 & her 1st #1 on the Adult Contemporary chart. The song faced controversy when Madonna performed it on her 2006 Confessions Tour wearing a crown of thorns while hanging on a giant mirrored cross. The performance at Rome's Olympic Stadium was condemned as an act of hostility toward the Roman Catholic Church by religious leaders.
