Here’s a delightful Goon Show momento from yesteryear. On initial inspection it’s a slightly beat-up copy of the BBC’s The Last Goon Show of All, a special one-off edition of The Goon Show commissioned as part of the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the BBC and simulcast on radio and television on October 5th, 1972. The performance reunited Spike Milligan, Peter Sellers and Harry Secombe as well as other contributors to the programme's original run, and it was released on vinyl shortly after. These records are a dime a dozen in UK charity shops, but this copy is a little bit special.
It was sent by Peter Sellers (courtesy of his publicist Theo Cowan) to Ross Bailey at the Chalmers United Church in Woodstock, Ontario here in Canada. It also mentions “Project Honduras”. Google isn’t very helpful but I would guess that Ross Bailey was involved in a humanitarian effort in Honduras by this name, and he likely wrote to Peter Sellers requesting a donation for some sort of charity event, and this was what he received. The letter is signed by Peter Sellers, and as you take the inner sleeve out – lo and behold! – it has been signed beautifully by Sellers, Spike Milligan and Harry Secombe!
The record itself is barely in VG condition, with a bunch of light marks, and plays with a lot of surface noise and stray pops. I gave it a deep clean in my Degritter ultrasonic record cleaner, but not much can improve it. However, you likely have another copy you can play, and it’s not the record itself that is of interest here. The sleeve is rather beat up, a VG at best, with a fair amount of creasing but no splits. The signed inner sleeve is in tact with no splits and has some creases. The letter is in great shape with just a little creasing.
