I'm currently selling some records for a friend of mine, renowned Toronto music publicist Richard Flohil. A legend in the Canadian music scene, he's been a publicist and concert promoter since the 1950s when he first touched down in Toronto from the UK. He booked B.B. King and Buddy Guy’s first Canadian concerts and he’s still working at 87.

Here's a really unusual item from Richard's collection. I pulled some Billy Joe Shaver LPs from his record shelves, and when I took this copy of "I'm Just An Old Chunk Of Coal" out of its sleeve, this letter from Johnny Cash slid out with the record. After 40 years, Richard had no recollection of having received it. How Johnny Cash came to have a hand in Billy Joe Shaver's publishing is something maybe someone reading this knows about, but I do not. At any rate, Johnny had heard that Richard was a fan of Billy Joe and he sent him this LP with a view to having Richard press the Canadian CBS office to release the album domestically here, something that never came to pass.

Jury Krytiuk who Mr. Cash references in the letter was a Canadian songwriter and producer who managed Stompin' Tom Connors and founded the Toronto-based Boot Records label, and later the publishing company Morning Music.

The record is something of a rarity on its own WITHOUT the letter from Johnny Cash. This is the first US pressing (matrix numbers AL-37078-1C / BL-37078-1C Masterfonics). The record is in near mint condition with virtually no signs of prior play. The sleeve has some minor wear around the edges and a small patch of rubbing to the centre of the spine. The inner sleeve has 3" centre seam splits on two of the three sides. The letter from Mr. Cash is pristine.

An autograph dealer contacted me and suggested that this is a secretarial signature, signed by Johnny's daughter Cathy Cash. I found some other examples of her signature online and this does indeed seem to be the case:
