ITEM DESCRIPTION:

This beautiful and quite rare LP from La Voix de son Maitre (ASDF 110, French pressing, red/silver semi-circle grooved label, stereo, dowel spine) features André Cluytens and the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra’s resplendent account of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3 in E-flat Major Op. 55 "Eroica", recorded in the spacious acoustics of the Grünewaldkirche, Berlin in December 1958.

Though it preceded von Karajan’s more famous traversal, recorded during the winter of 1961/62 for Deutsche Grammophon, Cluyten’s cycle never equaled the latter in terms of sales or reputation, the DG set remaining the most widely sold, both in terms of distribution and volume, ever released.  But if French EMI’s marketing resources could not match the high-powered campaign mobilized for Karajan, it could still take pride in having issued arguably the finest integral cycle of the post-war era.  Expansive, resilient, and powerfully moulded, Cluyten’s Beethoven boasts a deeply burnished sound allied to an unflagging energy and concentration – nowhere more so than in this thrilling and majestic "Eroica".  In short, it’s an enthralling performance, with the Berlin Philharmonic on tremendous form throughout, sweeping all before it. The sound, produced/engineered by René Challan /Horst Lindner is uniformly outstanding, warm and spacious, well matching the breadth and depth of the performance.

Incidentally, the superlative liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket, in French only, were written by William Mann. The striking jacket was designed by Atelier Joubert.

CONDITION – PLEASE READ VERY CAREFULLY:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the jacket is VERY GOOD+. There is some edge wear and corner wear. However, there are no seam splits, bends, owners’ markings, or other defects, and the album remains solid, bright, and very attractive – overall, this rates as a very good collector’s copy.

The condition of the dowel spine is EXCELLENT. There are no seamsplits to the paper sleeve and the dowel remains solid and in fine condition, the gold lettering crisp and legible. Overall, this rates as an excellent collector’s copy.

The condition of the LP itself is EXCELLENT. Visually, there are some non-sounding hairline marks. However, while the surfaces are not absolutely silent, this is a fine copy and the playback is quite superb. There are no tics or any other serious defects whatsoever, occasional light surface noise. If you must have flawless or NM surfaces, please do not buy this LP. Overall, this rates as an excellent collector's copy.
