ITEM DESCRIPTION:

This exceedingly rare Spanish-only issue gatefold LP from Hispavox (HH 1001, Spanish pressing, black/silver label, mono – no stereo edition exists) was issued under the auspices of UNESCO and features legendary French pianist Marcelle Meyer in Oscar Esplá's Sonata del Sur for Piano and Orchestra, recorded in 1956 with the Spanish National Orchestra, Madrid under the baton of the composer. A major work, some 25 minutes in length, it was premiered in Paris in 1945 by pianist Eduardo del Pueyo, conductor Franz André, and the French National Orchestra. It was also in the active repertoire of pianists Alicia de Larrocha and Aldo Ciccolini. Meyer herself had played under the direction of conductor Ataulfo Argenta, but she is superbly partnered by the composer here and anyone who admires, say, Ravel's Concerto for Left Hand, will find much to savor – a fascinating, remarkable work.

Filling out the disc is Esplá's Nochebuena del Diablo Op. 19, a cantata for soprano soloist and orchestra, here sung by Isabel Penagos, with the composer again ably directing the Spanish National Orchestra (the vocal text is re-printed in the notes – in Spanish only).

The production standards for this set are quite impressive – very heavy, canvas-bound gatefold jacket with gilt lettering. The interior panels contain extensive liner notes as well as a brief biography of Meyer, printed in Spanish only.

CONDITION – PLEASE READ CAREFULLY:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the jacket is EXCELLENT. There is general aging and mild discoloration. However, there are no seam splits, owners' markings, or other defects, and the whole remains perfectly solid and highly attractive – overall, an excellent collector's copy.

The condition of the LP itself is EXCELLENT. Although the surfaces are not CD silent – there is some light surface noise – in general the playback is superb. If you must have a flawless or NM copy, then please do not buy this LP. Over the years, I have sold 4 other copies. This is the best one yet and, overall, rates as an excellent collector's copy.
