Method Man & Redman – Blackout! Vinyl Me, Please. Rap & Hip Hop – RH083
For Method Man and Redman, regard for each other forms the core of their chemistry and camaraderie. That chemistry has been evident throughout Method Man and Redman’s careers, especially on their 1999 debut Blackout! In a year that saw releases by Lil Wayne, Nas, Snoop Dogg, DMX, Slick Rick, and Ja Rule, Meth and Red put forth a project that both highlighted their effortless flows in tandem and reinforced each of their individual skill sets. While the duo had collaborated previously, most notably on 1995’s “How High,” from the soundtrack of The Show, it was Blackout! that truly revealed the blunted adventures of the Wu-Tang swordsman and the Def Squad wordsmith.
From the rapidly changing slang to production techniques and evolving cadence preferences, not every rap recording can sound fresh after two decades. But because Meth and Red both possessed original and unorthodox flows and a penchant for unusual subject matter, Blackout! still stands the test of time musically and lyrically.
